MELBOURNE, FL - Florida Southern College women's lacrosse sophomore Marina Jozokos has been named as the Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
Jozokos was a crucial component of a defense that limited No. 1 Adelphi to a 48.5 shooting percentage. The Wolfeboro, NH native picked up four ground balls in the 17-16 victory over the Panthers.
On Saturday, her first of two goals came at 18:22 on the clock as the Moccasins went up 5-3 on No. 1 Adelphi. Jozokos found the back of the net 57 seconds into the second half to give the Mocs a 10-6 lead.
The victory by Florida Southern snapped the Panthers nine-game regular-season winning streak while marking the first time since April 28, 2012 that Adelphi has lost a non-conference, regular-season contest (19 in a row). FSC's victory was Adelphi's first-ever loss in a season opener.
Jozokos' award is the first of career. She joins teammate Dani Bursinger (Offensive Player of the Week) as this week's SSC Women's Lacrosse award winners, marking the first time this year and 11th time overall that Florida Southern has swept the weekly awards.
Next up for the Moccasins has them hosting a pair of games on March 3rd, Seton Hill (10 a.m.) and Tusculum (4 p.m.).
