O'Brien Selected as Finalist for Honda DII Woman Athlete of the Year

LOS ANGELES - Florida Southern College women's lacrosse standout Meghan O'Brien has been selected as the 2018 DII Honda Athlete of the Year nominee for lacrosse, the Collegiate Women Sports Awards (CWSA) presented by Honda announced this week. O'Brien is one of 11 student-athletes from 11 different sports to earn the honor and is now a finalist for the prestigious DII Honda Woman Athlete of the Year.

The CWSA program, which is now in its 42nd year, will use a national ballot of more than 1,000 NCAA member institutions to determine the DII Honda Woman Athlete of the Year. O'Brien recently wrapped up an incredible four-year stint at Florida Southern where she earned IWLCA first-team all-America honors as a sophomore and junior and is likely to earn another all-America nod this year.

"It's both incredible and extremely humbling to be considered for this amazing honor," said O'Brien. "As a walk-on just four years ago, I would never have imagined that something like this would come about - but now I cannot imagine my life without being a student-athlete. All of my accomplishments throughout my career are due to my coaches, family, friends, and the best teammates I could have asked for. Without all of them, I would not be the athlete or person I am today."

O'Brien is also a three-time first team all-South Region selection and a three-time first team all-Sunshine State Conference honoree. During her career at Florida Southern, she helped lead the Moccasins to three-straight appearances in the NCAA Division II National Championship contest including a national title in 2016. She ended her four years with the Mocs as just the second player in program history to record at least 100 goals (154) and 100 assists (124).

" Wow, what an amazing honor for Meghan to be a Honda Award nominee," said head coach Kara Reber. "I want to thank the CWSA for their recognition of Meghan and all she has achieved for our program. She is an amazing lacrosse player and an even better person. We are so proud of Meghan and all she has accomplished!"

All Honda Sports nominees from DII and DIII become a finalist for the prestigious 2018 Honda Woman Athlete of the Year in their respective divisions, presented in a live telecast on CBS Sports on June 25, 2018, in downtown Los Angeles.
