Sunshine State Conference Announces 2019 Women's Soccer Coaches Poll

Sunshine State Conference Announces 2019 Women's Soccer Coaches Poll

MELBOURNE, FL - Florida Southern College women's soccer has been selected to finish seventh in the annual Sunshine State Conference preseason coaches poll. SSC women's soccer coaches have chosen Barry University as the preseason favorite in 2019. The Buccaneers have been picked to repeat as league champions after receiving 92 total points and five first-place votes in the poll.

Nova Southeastern University lands in a close second place with 90 points, while Rollins College comes in third with 84 points. Both the Sharks and Tars garnered three first-place votes from league coaches. The University of Tampa (75 points) and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (68 points) round out the Top-5 teams in the preseason ranking.

Florida Tech sits in the middle of the poll (48 points) and is followed closely in the voting by the Florida Southern (43 points) and Eckerd College (36 points). Palm Beach Atlantic University (31 points), Lynn University (23 points), and Saint Leo University (13 points) hold the final three positions in the ranking.

Barry claimed the 2018 SSC regular-season championship, it's first since they had won three straight titles from 2013-15. The Buccaneers also took home the tournament title as they defeated the Sharks, 6-0. Barry owns the most SSC regular-season titles at ten, while Tampa leads the league with six conference tournament championships but Barry is second with three tournament titles.

The NCAA tournament did not bode well for the Sunshine State Conference as Barry, Rollins, and Nova Southeastern all dropped their first matches. Barry (3), Lynn (1), and Tampa (1) boast all five of the SSC's women's soccer national championships. The Spartans won the league's most recent title in 2007.

Barry enters the season ranked No. 20 in the 2019 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division II preseason women's poll. The ranking was announced Tuesday, August 6th.

Seven SSC squads are set to open the 2019 season as they compete in non-conference action on Thursday, September 5th. The conference schedule starts with a three-game slate on September 21st.

Florida Southern's 2019 season will open with three-straight matches at Moccasin Field. The first weekend of competition will include non-conference matches against Valdosta State (Sept. 5), Shorter (Sept. 6), and Georgia College (Sept. 8). The Moccasins first road trip will include two in Cleveland (Miss.) with a neutral site match against Union (Sept. 13) at Delta State followed by a match against the host Delta State (Sept. 15). The remaining road matches in the first month will put the Mocs at Flagler (Sept. 18) and at Palm Beach Atlantic (Sept. 21) to kick off the conference portion of the schedule. September will at Moccasin field with matches against Rollins (Sept. 25) and Nova Southeastern (Sept. 28). Paul Lawrence, in his third season as the head coach of the Mocs, will return 21 players from the 2018 squad. Lawrence brought in seven including Jenny Staten in goal, and Kailin Wiley, a transfer from Edmonds Community College.
