TAMPA, FL - Florida Southern officially opened its dual match Spring Season with a 7-2 win at the University of Tampa. The 17th ranked Moccasins start off with a 1-0 record while Tampa suffers its first defeat in three matches.
The Moccasins took two of the three doubles matches to kick-off the day. Magda Stepnik and Nina Schwab picked up Florida Southern's first point with an 8-6 win at number two over Tampa's Vanina Iordanova and Maddie Stephens while Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci made it 2-0 Moccasins with an 8-6 victory against Caroline Lozo and Corbin Dorsey at number one. FSC's duo of Lorena Rionda and Lola Asis dropped an 8-6 set to Lilley Nice and Amanda Baxter at number three.
In singles, Nionova, ranked 13th nationally, quickly dispatched Lozo, 6-0, 6-1 at number one while Natalja Popovic fell 6-3, 6-1 to Nice at number four as the Spartans pulled within one of the Moccasins, 3-2. Avery Hunter downed Danielle Beyes, 6-2, 7-6, at number six to put the Mocs lead to 4-2 while Devrimci topped Iordanova 7-6, 6-4 at number two to clinch the win for Florida Southern.
In the final two matches, Stepnick defeated Stephens, 6-4, 7-5 at number three while Asis topped Dorsey, 4-6, 7-6, 6-0 at number five.
Florida Southern will host Lynn, 2017 national runner-up, on Friday at 3:00 p.m. at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
