BRADENTON, FL - Florida Southern, ranked 10th in the NCAA Division II, was upset, 5-1, by unranked Nova Southeastern in the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Sunshine State Conference Women's Tennis Tournament contested here Thursday at the IMG Academy. The loss drops the Moccasins to 14-7 while the Sharks improve to 10-13.
The Moccasins, which were ranked fourth in the last NCAA South Region rankings, will learn if their season will continue on Tuesday, April 24 when the NCAA regional field is announced. Seven teams will be selected from the South Region for two preliminary-round tournaments. Nova Southeastern advances to play Lynn tomorrow at 10 a.m.
Florida Southern struck first in doubles as Lorena Rionda and Natalija Popovic defeated Eva Agasse and Alexandra Yeardley, 8-2, at number three, but Nova Southeastern came back to take the final two pairings. At number one, the 10th-ranked pairing of Andrea Ivanovic and Daniella Obando topped 11th-ranked Sasha Nionova and Selin Devrimci, 8-4, while at number two, Ana Navas and Isabella Lowrey teamed together to post an 8-4 win over Nina Schwab and Magda Stepnik.
In singles, NSU's Navas ranked 28th nationally defeated Rionda, 6-3, 6-0, at number one while Ivanovic topped Devrimci, 6-2, 6-3, to push the Sharks ahead 4-1. Obando then sealed the win for Nova Southeastern with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Popovic at number three. In tournament play, once a team reaches five wins, the match is called at that point any matches in progress are halted.
