Despite a career-high 15 kills from the Moccasins' Kelly Sherman, New Haven won a five-set match over FSC Monday night in West Haven, Conn., 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 21-25, 15-7.
Sherman hit .423 for the match and teammates Anne Pietkiewicz and Julia Borecka each posted a double-double, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Moccasins from suffering their seventh straight loss, dropping their record to 10-11. New Haven improved to 15-4.
Pietkiewicz had 14 kills and 15 digs for her eighth double-double, while hitting .367. Borecka had 13 kills and 11 digs for her ninth double-double.
The Moccasins started strong and won the first set, hitting .400 and committing just two attack errors with 16 kills. New Haven came back to win the next two sets. In the fourth set, the Mocs broke a 16-16 tie on a kill by Borecka and led the rest of the set to force the deciding fifth set. New Haven jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the set and the Moccasins were unable to mount a challenge.
Friday the Moccasins play the first of three weekend matches against South Region opponents at Tampa. They meet North Alabama at 5:15 p.m. Friday, then play West Florida at 11 a.m. and Arkansas-Monticello at 5:45 p.m. Saturday.
