For the third consecutive year, the Moccasin volleyball team is the recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award.
The award, which was started in the 1992-93 season, recognizes teams that display excellence in the classroom by producing a team grade point average of at least 3.30 for the most recent school year.
One of 55 NCAA Division II programs recognized, the Moccasins posted a team GPA of 3.39. Eleven of the members of coach Jill Stephens' 2009 squad had GPAs above 3.00 for the year and seven recorded GPAs above 3.50.
The Moccasins were one of four Sunshine State Conference teams to receive the AVCA award. Barry, Lynn and Tampa were the other three.
AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer said, "There is no better way to gauge the success of a sport than to track the accomplishments of the people who participate. Each of these teams represents 12-15 really smart kids. What a great day for the sport of volleyball."
