After watching freshman teammate Kate Stromberg shine in the Mocs' season opener, freshman Gabby Fernandez took her turn in the spotlight in FSC's second contest of the season, a three-set win over New Haven, 25-21, 25-13, 25-19, in Friday's final match of the first day of the FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic at Jenkins Field House.
Fernandez, from Tampa, led the team with 10 kills and hit. 316 for the match. Stromberg followed her 15-kill performance in the opening match with a seven-kill, error-free effort against New Haven, hitting .500 for the match. For the two matches combined, the two freshmen each had 22 kills.
Anne Pietkiewicz added to her solid effort for the day with eight kills and a .400 hitting percentage against New Haven and finished the day with 20 kills and a .348 hitting percentage.
Keidy Candelaria led New Haven with 12 kills.
The FSC/Terrace Hotel Classic concludes Saturday at Jenkins Field House with four more matches. Rollins plays Shippensburg (Pa.) at 10 a.m., FSC plays Shippensburg at 1:30 p.m., Rollins takes on eighth-ranked Grand Valley State at 3:30 p.m. and FSC goes against Grand Valley State at 7 p.m.
