Led by Diana Castrillon's 11 kills, the Moccasins topped in-state rival West Florida, 25-23, 25-17, 12-25, 25-23, in their final match at the Premier Challenge in Denver Saturday to finish with a 2-2 record for the two-day event. The win gave FSC third place in the Silver bracket.
Leading two sets to one, the Moccasins (5-3) broke a 17-17 tie in the fourth set with four straight points on a kill by Erin Callahan, a UWF error and a pair of service aces by Anne Pietkiewicz. UWF rallied from a 24-20 deficit to close the margin to 24-23 before Gabby Fernandez ended the match with a kill.
In addition to the 11 kills from Castrillon, the Moccasins received nine from Callahan, eight from Fernandez, seven each from Kate Stromberg and Lauren Huber and six from Pietkiewicz. Ali Skayhan produced a team-high 19 digs, Elena Sorich added 16 and Stromberg notched a team-best four blocks.
Jenny Bellairs led West Florida (2-6) with 19 kills.
The Mocs open Sunshine State Conference action Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Jenkins Field House against Rollins.
