Led by Erin Callahan's 13 kills, the Moccasins handed previously unbeaten Barry its first loss of the season, 25-20, 25-19, 25-23, in their Sunshine State Conference match Friday night at Miami Shores.
Callahan hit .526 for the match and picked up six blocks as part of a solid offensive effort by the Moccasins, who improved to 7-3 overall, 2-0 in the SSC.
Gabby Fernandez came off the bench to deliver eight kills and hit .429. Lauren Huber tallied seven kills and hit .357, as the Moccasins recorded a .319 team hitting percentage, their second highest of the season. In addition, Elena Sorich led FSC's defensive performance with 13 digs.
Barry (6-1, 0-1 SSC) was led by Mariana Lisboa and Tania Torres, who each had 12 kills.
Leading two sets to none, the Moccasins trailed 16-11 in the third set, but pulled even at 18-18 on a kill by Callahan. She tied it again at 20-20 wiith a kill, then back-to-back Barry errors put FSC ahead by two. After Barry cut the margin to 24-23, Diana Castrillon clinched the match with her sixth kill of the night.
The win by the Mocs was their first at Barry since the 2008 season.
Saturday the Moccasins will try to extend their winning streak to four and their SSC record to 3-0 with a 4 p.m. match at Lynn.
