Just as they did in their first meeting this season back on Sept. 14, the Moccasins and Rollins battled through five sets Wednesday night at Winter Park. While the Moccasins won the Sept. 14 match, the Tars prevailed Wednesday night, 25-13, 20-25, 25-22, 22-25, 16-14.
The win was the Tars' eighth straight and boosted their record to 17-7 overall, 7-2 in the Sunshine State Conference. The Mocs fell to 11-10, 5-4 in the SSC.
Trailing two sets to one, the Moccasins grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the fourth set and never trailed, forcing the decisive fifth set.
The margin by either team was never more than two points in set five. The Moccasins thought they had a three-point advantage at 11-8, but the call that gave them the 11th point was reversed by the officials and their lead was only 10-9. Rollins then got back-to-back service aces from Megan Hodges to go up 11-10. The set was tied at 12-12, 13-13 and 14-14 before back-to-back kills by Collyn Welsch clinched the win for the Tars.
Lauren Huber led the Moccasins with 14 kills, but she was the only Moccasin in double figures. Gabby Fernandez and Diana Castrillon each had nine and Anne Pietkiewicz produced eight. Erin Callahan added seven kills and seven blocks. Castrillon delivered a career-high five blocks.
Hodges led Rollins with 20 kills. Camille Indest added 13, Kelly Merideth picked up 11 and Welsch delivered 10.
The Mocs are at home Friday night for a 7 p.m. match against Lynn at Jenkins Field House.
