Strong performances by Kate Stromberg and Lauren Huber helped power the Moccasins to a three-set win over Saint Leo, 25-20, 25-15, 25-19, Friday night at Saint Leo. It was the Moccasins' first win at Saint Leo since 2007.
Stromberg hit .500 for the match with 11 kills and Huber hit .348 with 12 kills. In addition, Anna Niebuhr delivered a team-high 14 digs, Erin Callahan had a five-block performance and Kendall Wilde connected for three aces.
In the first set the Moccasins (14-12, 8-5 in the Sunshine State Conference) broke a 9-9 tie on back-to-back kills by Gabby Fernandez and Stomberg and led the rest of the set. A 5-0 run in the second set broke a 9-9 tie, giving the Moccasins a lead they kept through the remainder of the set. In the third set the Moccasins broke a 4-4 tie with two straight points and never gave up the lead.
The loss was the fourth straight for Saint Leo (12-14, 5-9 SSC). Danielle Bletso led the Lions with eight kills.
Saturday the Moccasins play a 4 p.m. SSC match at #22 Eckerd, which won its 14th straight match with a five-set decision over North Alabama Friday night.
