The Moccasins made their final home match of the season an enjoyable one, topping Florida Tech in three sets, 25-21, 25-10, 25-19, in their Sunshine State Conference contest at Jenkins Field House Tuesday night. The win was FSC's third straight and extended Florida Tech's losing streak to nine straight.
With the first set tied at 18-18, a pair of attack errors by the Panthers and a kill by Anne Pietkiewicz put the Moccasins up 21-18 and they went on to win the set by four. In the second set, with the Moccasins leading 1-0, Lauren Huber served for 13 unanswered points and the Moccasins cruised to a two-set advantage. The Mocs never trailed in the third set, pulling away from an 8-6 lead with five straight points and the Panthers never got closer than five points the rest of the set.
Huber led a balanced offensive effort with nine kills, while hitting .600 for the match. Erin Callahan added eight kills, while Pietkiewicz, Diana Castrillon and Gabby Fernandez each produced five kills.
Janice Valies led Florida Tech with 11 kills.
The Mocs finish their regular season Friday at 8 p.m. at Nova Southeastern, then will await word Sunday night for an expected NCAA tournament bid. The NCAA selection announcement for the Division II Volleyball Tournament will be Sunday at 10 p.m. and can be seen at www.ncaa.com.
