Keen Adds Eight for 2019 Season

LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College volleyball head coach Chris Keen has added four transfers and four freshmen to join the Moccasins for the upcoming 2019 season. The incoming class includes student-athletes from six different states as well as two foreign nationals. Florida Southern is coming off a 22-11 record last year including an appearance in the NCAA South Region semifinal.

OLENA BONDAR | 6-0 | OH/RS | GR
San Francisco | Korosten, Ukraine 

Bondar comes to Florida Southern after spending one season at Division-I University of San Francisco. The Korosten, Ukraine native played in all 29 matches and appeared in 94 sets for the Dons. She was third on the team in points (229.5), kills (190) and total attacks (806). Highlights from the season include 22.5 points, 19 kills, five blocks and a service ace against Pacific (Nov. 20) and 35 total attacks, 16.5 points, 14 kills, nine digs and three total blocks against Saint Mary's (Oct. 18). Bondar recorded at least eight kills in 13 matches and at least 10 kills in seven matches, as well as recording five matches with at least a .300 hitting percentage, including September 15 against UC Riverside (.636) and November 3 against Portland (.444). 

Coach Keen's take...
"Lena is a veteran player that brings high-level experience from both overseas and here in the states who has the ability to attack all along the net. We will look for her to contribute on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball."


MANDEE EBERLE | 6-0 | OH | GR
St. Mary's | Terre Haute, Ind.

Eberle joins the Moccasins after playing for Division-I Jacksonville State and Lone Star Conference member St. Mary's. At St. Mary's the Indiana native started in 31 matches and appeared in 111 sets as the team captain, averaging 2.85 points per set and 2.48 kills per set. Her stint at Jacksonville State saw her play in 27 matches and appear in 59 sets, tallying 54 kills, 34 digs and nine total blocks. In her senior year at Terre Haute high school Eberle played in 88 sets while recording 436 kills, 25 total blocks, 328 digs and 66 aces. She was named First-Team All-Conference and All-District for three years.

"Mandee brings a wealth of experience. Even though she will be new to Florida Southern, she is a veteran player that will impact our program. She is a competitor with strong ball control and blocking ability."


BEATRICE FORMILAN | 5-9 | L/DS | SO
Xavier University of Lousiana | Santorso, Italy

Formilan comes to Florida Southern after one year at Xavier University of Louisiana. She played in 33 matches and appeared in 107 sets for the Gold Nuggets, averaging 4.02 digs per set with 430 digs on the season. The Santorso, Italy native tallied 36 service aces with an average of .34 aces per set and helped guide the Gold Nuggets to the GCAC championships in the regular season and tournament. A three-time defender of the week for GCAC, she was an All-Tournament team selection. During her freshman campaign, she recorded at least 10 digs in 22 matches, at least 15 digs in 10 matches and at least 20 digs in six matches. She recorded 25 digs three times last season against Cumberlands (Aug. 24), St. Thomas - Texas (Sept. 7) and Campbellsville (Oct. 13).

"We are really excited about the addition of Beatrice to our team. She is a great passer and will bring calmness and balance to our Serve Receive."


ERICA RONDA | 5-11 | OH | JR
South Mountain CC | Chandler, Ariz.

The final transfer of the incoming class, Ronda joins the Moccasins after stints at the University of San Francisco and South Mountain CC. At South Mountain, Ronda led the conference and was sixth nationally in kills (565) and also led the conference and was seventh nationally in kills per set (4.44). She was additionally second in the conference with .54 aces per set and fifth in the conference with a .312 hitting percentage. At San Francisco, she played in 30 matches and appeared in 103 sets, leading the team in points (310), kills (266) and kills per set (2.58). The Arizona native also tallied 1,025 attacks and recorded 28 services aces with an average of .27 aces per set.

"Erica is a student of the game who comes from a strong volleyball background. She is a dynamic attacker that we are looking forward to making an immediate impact on our program."


MIKA GARZA | 5-6 | S | FR
Incarnate Word | San Antonio, Texas

Garza comes to Florida Southern after completing her high school career at Incarnate Word. In her senior year as team captain she helped guide her team to a Texas state semi-final. The San Antonian also earned First Team All-District and was an All-State Honorable Mention. Garza also played for the Alamo, San Antonio Sting and Superior 18's National club teams.

"Mika has a great understanding of the game and offensive systems. She is a competitor that will bring court leadership to our program."


RAELEY MATTHEWS | 6-0 | OH | FR
Lake Placid | Okeechobee, Fla.

Matthews joins the Moccasins after attending Lake Placid. In her high school career, Matthews tallied 870 kills, 505 digs and 45 blocks. Matthews had a stellar senior year, setting the single-season kill record (438) as well as being named All Highlands County player of the year and earning a selection to the Florida Athletic Coaches Association (FACA) All-Star Classic Tournament. The Floridian was named MVP in her senior year and was also named MVP for basketball her sophomore year.

"Raeley is a very physical attacker and has the skills to become a solid six rotation player. She will have a strong presence on our team and has a bright future as a Moc. We are looking forward to working with her this season."


ALI TRAVIS | 5-8 | OH | FR
Holy Family | Loveland, Colo.

Travis comes to Florida Southern after a standout career at Holy Family. She tallied 1,455 kills for eighth all-time for the Colorado High School Athletic Association, is sixth all-time in the CHSAA for career points (1,804) and finished 11th all-time for the CHSAA in service aces (231). She also recorded 148 blocks, 1,276 digs and 231 aces. Travis received numerous honors, including First Team All-Conference (2015-2018), All-Region First Team (2015-2018), First Team All-State (2016-2018), Conference MVP (2017-18), BOCO Preps Player of the Year (2016), MaxPreps All-America Team (2016) and All-State Academic (2016-18).

"Ali is an extremely hard worker on and off the court. She comes from a great club program with a competitive background. Ali is a well-rounded volleyball player that can compete in both the front row and back row. Her impact on our program will be felt immediately."


SARAH ZAYAS | 5-4 | DS | FR
Huntley | Lake in the Hills, Ill.

Zayas joins the Moccasins after starting four years at Huntley. In her career she played in 279 sets, recording 1,089 digs, 817 service receptions, 73 aces and 404 assists. In her senior year, Zayas recorded four service aces against West Chicago (Sept. 19), Venice (Sept. 29) and Naperville Central (Oct. 13). Her senior year also saw her record 348 digs, tallying more than 10 digs in 18 matches. Her 1,089 career digs set a record for the Fox Valley Conference and Huntley.

"Sarah is a feisty defender and a great team player who makes those around her better. She is a versatile player that can play multiple skill positions. We are glad to have Sarah bring that to our program."
