TALLAHASSEE, FL - Sophomore Hannah Nelson finished in sixth place in the Little State division (non-Division I teams) with a personal-best time of 19:25.0 to lead Florida Southern to a runner-up finish in the Florida State University Invitational held here Friday at the Apalachee Regional Park. The Moccasins totaled 78 points in the 15-team non-Division I portion of the Invitational to finish second behind Tampa, which won with 35 points. Overall, Florida Southern placed fifth in the 21 team field that included six Division I institutions.
Hannah, who beat her previous best time by 8.7 seconds, came in 40th overall in the 192-individual 5K race, followed by junior Aleksa Guerra who turned in a time of 19:40.0, shaving 15 seconds off her previous top time, to finish 8th in the non-Division I portion of the race (45th overall). Freshman Mercedes Mendoza was close behind, placing 10th (49th overall) with a 19:43.8 time, eclipsing her previous 5K time of 20:27.3, while fellow freshman Hannah Flemming came in 25th (73rd) with a 20:18.9 time.
Sophomore Anna Brook Opalinski came in 29th (77th) with a time of 20:28.7 (over 20 seconds better than her career-best time) while junior Jolene Vergauwen was 32nd (81st) with a 20:36.9 time while freshman Amber Winton was 42nd (100th) with a time of 21:12.6 (besting her previous best time of 21:31.6) to wrap up the counted scores for Florida Southern.
Florida Southern returns to action next Friday, Oct. 13, at the University of South Florida Invitational at The Claw in Tampa.
