NEW ORLEANS – Florida Southern College's women's cross country will start its 2019 season ranked fourth in the preseason South Region Poll, released Tuesday by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Moccasins finished fourth last November at the NCAA South Region Championships.
Lee, which finished third in the region last fall, claim the top spot in the South Region Poll. The defending regional champions Embry-Riddle enter this year in the number two position while last year's runner-up Union ranks third. Tampa rounds out the top five in the preseason poll.
Saint Leo (7), Lynn (9) and Nova Southeastern (10) also represented the Sunshine State Conference in the top ten.
The Moccasins are entering their second year under head coach Stephanie Bylander, whose first season was highlighted with a fourth-place finish at the NCAA South Regional Championships, the teams best since 2007. The USTFCCCA All-Region duo of Addison Cantor and Hannah Flemming, who finished 10th and 11th last year, respectively, are looking to help drive their program to their first NCAA Division II National Championships in 13 years.
The top three teams at the South Region Championships will gain an automatic qualifying spot in the NCAA Division II National Championship. This year's championship will be held on Nov. 23 in Sacramento, Calif.
The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) is a non-profit professional organization representing cross country and track & field coaches of all levels. The organization represents thousands of coaching members encompassing NCAA track & field programs (DI, DII, and DIII) and includes members representing the NAIA and NJCAA, as well as a number of state high school coaches associations.
