Freshmen Make Key Contributions in Sweep of St. Anselm

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT â€" In Florida Southern’s senior-dominated lineup, freshman Dayna Hunn has found a home. Now the Moccasins are hoping freshman Lauren Wolfe can do the same in the pitcher’s circle. With Hunn driving in three runs in the opener, and Wolfe pitching her second straight shutout in game two, Florida Southern swept St. Anselm (NH) at the National Training Center, winning 7-1 and 4-0.

Going into Tuesday’s doubleheader, Hunn was hitting .385 with six RBI out of the #7 spot in the batting order. She added to those numbers in game one with an RBI single in the second inning that put Florida Southern ahead 2-1, and blew the game open with a two-run triple in the fourth. She then swiped home as part of a double steal, to complete the Mocs’ four-run fourth and give them a 6-1 lead.

The Moccasins (11-2) ended up with seven runs on 11 hits in the game, despite a 1-for-12 performance from the top three hitters in the lineup, a group that started the day all hitting .359 or better. It didn’t seem to affect the offense though, as the four through seven spots went 9-for-14 with five RBI and six runs scored.

While Hunn was one of those hitters, another was Brittany Martin, who played a big part in the two-run second and the four-run fourth. With the Mocs trailing 1-0, the senior third baseman led off the second inning with a double, and after taking third on a bad-hop single by Christine Clark off the shortstop’s shoulder, she scored the tying run on a passed ball. Martin then led off the top of the fourth with her second home run of the season, putting the Mocs up 3-1.

After Martin’s home run, Clark and Devin Mathews singled in front of Hunn, who gave the Mocs their fourth straight hit with her 2-run triple into right center. A walk by Christie Bailey set up the Mocs’ double steal that produced the fourth run of the inning.

The Moccasins scored their final run in the top of the seventh on an RBI pinch-hit double by Sam Gale.

Though Florida Southern ended up winning game one going away, it was St. Anselm (3-2) that scored first. The Hawks hit Christine Clark fairly hard in the first three innings, but could score only once, with that coming on back-to-back hits to start the game. Monique Gauthier drove in the run for St. Anselm with a double, but Clark held them to just one run when she caught a liner back to the circle by Kat Scafidi for the final out of the first.

Clark stranded two more runners in the second, and two in the third, but the senior gave up just one more base runner the rest of the game. That one was erased on a double play turned by Steph Graziani at second, allowing Clark to face the minimum of 12 batters over the final four innings. For the game, she gave up six hits, walked one and struck out six to up her record to 7-1.

St. Anselm went through three pitchers in game one, with Alexis Bogdanovich starting and taking the loss. The freshman had taken a perfect game into the seventh inning in her first start Monday, but the Mocs got to her for six runs on seven hits Tuesday. She was knocked out in the fourth, and the combo of Paige Cormier and Hayley Leclaire held the Mocs to one run on four hits the rest of the way.

In game two, Wolfe walked a tightrope throughout the entire game, but her balancing act produced her second shutout of the season, and the Moccasins’ sixth during their current nine-game winning streak. It’s one she won’t soon forget. The Hawks threatened in almost every inning, but Wolfe worked around five hits and six walks, leaving the bases loaded in the second, and getting out of two other innings with double plays.

The second inning presented Wolfe with the most difficult situation after the Hawks loaded the bases with none out on a pair of walks and a base hit by Noelle Lussier. Wolfe never broke though, getting back-to-back force outs at the plate before getting a called third strike on a 3-2 pitch against Nicole Boucher.

The Hawks loaded the bases again in the bottom of the fifth, but again Wolfe slammed the door. This time she got help from Graziani and Mathews. Graziani went into short right to catch a pop-up by Cara Crowley, and the Hawks tried to surprise the Mocs by sending the runner from third. With Mathews blocking the plate, Graziani’s throw was in time and on target for the final out of the inning, keeping the Hawks off the board one more time.

Wolfe also used six strikeouts to earn her shutout, and improved to 2-1 with the win.

Offensively, the Moccasins got three hits and three stolen bases from Karlyn Scott, two RBI ground outs by Brittany Martin and one RBI ground out by Randi Grimes. Scott scored after all three of her hits, in the first, third and fifth innings, and swiped second on two occasions to put herself in scoring position.

Two of their runs came in the bottom of the first after Graziani and Scott had reached on bunt singles to start the inning. Grimes and Martin brought them in with ground balls for a 2-0 lead, and Scott made it 3-0 in the third inning when she singled, stole second and came home on a wild pitch.

Florida Southern did most of its scoring against Cormier (2-1), who started game two but lasted only two batters into the third inning. The Moccasins had six hits off her, but only one of relief pitcher Tayla Trask, who went the final four innings, struck out seven and walked none.

Florida Southern will play again Wednesday night when it hosts Mount Olive (NC) in a doubleheader at 5:00 p.m.
