LAKELAND â€" Chelsea Oglevie put together a dominating pitching performance in game one Friday night, and Priscilla Gonzalez had a dominating performance all night long at the plate. With Oglevie tossing a 2-hit shutout in the opener, and Gonzalez going 6-for-7 with four RBI in the doubleheader, Florida Southern swept Western Ontario, 2-0 and 12-4 in six innings.
In pitching her first shutout of the season, Oglevie allowed only a single to Brittany Hicks in the fourth inning, and a single to Kristen Herman in the fifth. The senior from Tampa also walked two, hit one, and struck out four to improve her record to 1-2 on the season. She’s allowed only six hits in her last two starts, both of them complete games.
Two of Oglevie’s four strikeouts came in tough spots too. The Mustangs, who have won three straight Canadian National Championships, got two on in the fourth with a hit batter and Hicks’ single, and two on in the fifth on Herman’s single and a sacrifice/fielder’s choice. Each time, Oglevie ended the inning with a strikeout. She also got Jenn Wakefield to hit into a double play in the sixth when a walk and an error put two Mustangs on base.
The Moccasins had six hits off Amber Smolenaars, who kept them off the scoreboard in all but the third inning. The Mocs had three of their hits in that one, which included RBI singles by juniors Jessica Lanci (Orlando, Fla.) and Dayna Hunn (Morriston, Fla.). The Mocs also got a leadoff walk from senior Allasyn Lieneck (Oldsmar, Fla.) in the third that turned into their first run.
In game two, the Moccasins (4-4) scored in all but the first inning while banging out 15 hits in a run-rule victory. Gonzalez, who went 2-for-3 in game one, went 4-for-4 with a double and four RBI to lead the Florida Southern offense, while Hunn went 3-for-4 with two RBI. The Mocs also got two hits apiece from Lieneck, Lanci, and senior Christie Bailey (Jacksonville, Fla.), and two RBI from junior Kylee Stearns (Lakeland, Fla.).
Gonzalez was the big gun though. She had a hit in four of the five innings where the Moccasins scored, just as she had a hit in the only inning they scored in during game one. The junior first baseman from Miami singled and scored the Mocs’ first run in the second inning after they had fallen behind 3-0, and then put them ahead 5-3 with a 2-run double in the third. She later delivered a 2-run single in the fourth, and had another single in the sixth when she came around to score the final run of the night.
Early on, Western Ontario had the lead with three runs on five hits through the first two innings, though Florida Southern also committed two errors to give the Mustangs both of their runs in the top of the second. The Mustangs had already scored once in the top of the first after a 2-out infield single by Shannon Davidson, that was flared over pitcher Brandi Jones and fell just out of the reach of the Moccasin middle infielders. Tricia MacKay brought her in with a double.
The Mocs tied the game with three in the bottom of the second, with Gonzalez, Hunn, and sophomore Jordan Alexander (Valrico, Fla.) all scoring after reaching on base hits and moving around the bases on two outfield errors, a passed ball and a wild pitch. Stearns drove in the tying run when she bounced into a force out at second.
After Bailey and Lanci started the bottom of the third with singles, Gonzalez drove both of them in with a double into the left centerfield gap. The Mocs then got an RBI single from Lanci and a 2-run single from Gonzalez in the fourth to make it a 9-3 game, before an RBI double Stearns and RBI single by Lieneck made it 11-4 in the bottom of the fifth. The game ended one inning later when Gonzalez singled and took third on an error before coming home when Hunn hit a ground ball to second.
Jones got the win for Florida Southern by going the first four innings. She allowed six hits, but only one earned run while striking out three and walking none. Sophomore Kelli Connors (Waterford, Conn.) pitched the final two innings, giving up one run on three hits.
Florida Southern will play again on Wednesday night (Feb. 26) when it hosts Warner University in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m.
