Makeup Doubleheader With Warner Ends in a Split With Masterful Pitching by the Moccasins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAKELAND â€" Starting pitchers Chelsea Oglevie and Brandi Jones each threw seven masterful innings for the Moccasins in their doubleheader Tuesday night against Warner, but while Jones got the win in game two, Oglevie suffered another tough loss when game one went to extra innings. Jones allowed only three hits in a 3-1 victory in the nightcap after the Royals scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to take the opener, 4-1.

A senior from Tampa, Oglevie had allowed only three earned runs over her previous three complete game starts coming into Tuesday night’s makeup date from an earlier rainout. She put together another winning effort against Warner (4-8), giving up just six hits through the first seven innings before the Royals had three runs (two earned) on four hits in the top of the ninth. That came after Florida Southern (6-7) had tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh off Chelsie Valentine, who was equally impressive for Warner.

The only run through the first six innings came when Warner third baseman Jessica Adams launched a solo home run to straight away center with one out in the top of the second inning. The Royals had two other chances to score after that, but junior catcher Kim Booker (Bartow, Fla.) helped keep them off the board by throwing out Nicolette Wunderly attempting to steal after a leadoff infield single in the sixth, and picking Adams off second after a 1-out double in the seventh.

Meanwhile, Valentine allowed just one hit through the first five innings, a single by junior Priscilla Gonzalez in the fourth. The Moccasins would threaten in the sixth when junior Christie Bailey (Jacksonville, Fla.) reached on an error to start the inning, and was bunted into scoring position by sophomore Leah Pemberton (Valrico, Fla.). Gonzalez followed by looping a single into short center, but freshman pinch-runner Jamie Graziani (New Castle, Pa.) was forced to hold up at second base as the ball dropped in between the infielders and center fielder Tiffany Porter. Then, when junior Dayna Hunn (Morriston, Fla.) hit a ball into center, Porter threw a strike to third that nipped Graziani for an inning-ending double play.

The Mocs did get the tying run in the bottom of the seventh after Jones, who was playing as the DP in game one, was hit by a pitch with one out. Senior Allasyn Lieneck (Oldsmar, Fla.) put down a bunt that went for an infield single, and when junior Kylee Stearns (Lakeland, Fla.) also bunted, the Royals threw the ball away, allowing pinch-runner Courtney Hogrefe (Naples, Fla.) to score the tying run. Lieneck was caught in a run-down play between third and home, however, and the Mocs were unable to score again.

Two innings later, the Royals got to Oglevie when Stefani Bonilla led off the top of the ninth with a double, Padgett reached on a bunt single, and catcher Cynthia Micochero drove both of them in with a double to right center. After a Moccasin error, Porter made it 4-1 with an RBI single.

Valentine closed out the game after that for Warner, evening her record at 2-2. In nine full innings, she allowed only one unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

Oglevie gave up three earned runs on 10 hits for the Moccasins with three strikeouts and no walks, but fell to 2-4.

In game two, Jones was in total control, even though Warner reached her for an unearned run in the top of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. The Royals also had two of their three hits in that inning, which included an RBI single by Padgett. Following Padgett’s hit though, Jones retired the final 10 batters of the game. The freshman from Snellville, Georgia struck out nine and had no walks to push her record to 4-3.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the fourth, Florida Southern scored two in the bottom of the fourth off Padgett, taking advantage of a 2-out error that put Lieneck on base. She swiped second, took third on a bunt single by Stearns and scored as part of a double steal. Sophomore Jordan Alexander (Valrico, Fla.) then brought Stearns in with a triple down the leftfield line, giving the Mocs a 2-1 lead.

The Mocs tacked on one more in the fifth after Pemberton led off with one of her three hits in the game. Though she was erased on a fielder’s choice, that hit did turn into a run when Padgett couldn’t handle a ball hit back to the circle by freshman Jordan Honc (Cape Coral, Fla.) with two out.

Florida Southern ended up with eight hits off Padgett (0-3), with three coming from Pemberton. Gonzalez also had one to extend her hitting streak to 13 games. None of the runs scored against Padgett were earned, and she finished with no strikeouts and one walk.

Florida Southern will play another doubleheader at home on Wednesday against Dominican (NY), beginning at 5 p.m.
