LAKELAND â€" Leah Pemberton found a lot of different ways to drive in runs for the Moccasins Wednesday night, Jordan Alexander found even more places to put her half dozen hits, and Priscilla Gonzalez just kept hitting like she’s done in every game this season. Pemberton’s walk-off game-winning single in game two was the final highlight of the night, while Alexander had three hits in each game, and Gonzalez pushed her hitting streak to 15 games, as Florida Southern defeated Dominican (NY), 10-2 and 5-4.
The Moccasins (8-7) had 27 hits in the doubleheader against the 3-time defending champs from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, with Alexander’s six-pack leading the way. The sophomore from Valrico went 3-for-4 with two RBI in game one, and then went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in game two. Pemberton, another sophomore from Valrico, had two hits and an RBI in the first game, and followed that with one hit and a career-high three RBI in the second.
Gonzalez, a junior college transfer from Seminole State, had a single in each game, which allowed her to set a new team record for longest hitting streak at the start of a career. She surpassed the previous mark of 14, established by Krista Bradley in 2003.
The rest of the Florida Southern lineup did its share of damage too. Junior Kylee Stearns (Lakeland, Fla.) had a pair of 2-hit games and ended game one with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth that gave the Mocs a win by the 8-run rule. Junior Kim Booker (Bartow, Fla.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI in that game and picked up another hit in game two. Game one also saw senior Heather Brinkmeier (Port St. Joe, Fla.) drive in two runs and junior Dayna Hunn (Morriston, Fla.) pick up two of Florida Southern’s season-high 16 hits. Game two then saw senior Allasyn Lieneck (Oldsmar, Fla.) have two hits, and senior Christie Bailey (Jacksonville, Fla.) had hits in each game.
Freshman Brandi Jones (Snellville, Ga.) was the game-one winner with three shutout innings before sophomore Kelli Connors (Waterford, Conn.) pitched three innings for the save, allowing only one earned run. Senior Chelsea Oglevie (Tampa, Fla.) got a more unconventional win after that, pitching the first six innings and leaving with a 4-2 lead before re-entering to get the final out in the seventh after Dominican scored twice to tie the game.
Florida Southern led 8-0 after three innings of game one after scoring two in the second and six in the third. The Chargers (1-5) helped them out in the second inning with three errors, one of which brought in the first run of the game. An RBI single by Alexander made it 2-0, and the Mocs were off and running. Three straight singles by Pemberton, Gonzalez and Hunn started the third inning, Booker singled in two of them, and Brinkmeier drove in two more with a triple. Another run scored on a ground out by Alexander, and Bailey made it 8-0 with an RBI single.
The Mocs would add one more in the fifth inning when Alexander singled, stole second and scored on a base hit by Pemberton. They ended the game in the sixth when Booker singled, moved to second on a single by freshman pinch-hitter Taylor Manning (Naples, Fla.), and scored on Stearns’ second hit of the game.
Dominican, which is playing 12 games in Florida to start its season, had nine hits off Jones and Connors, but had trouble getting most of them home. The Chargers even had three hits in the top of the first without scoring, which included one of Shannon Haukap’s two triples in the game. Haukap started the game with one of them but was caught in a run-down when Brianne Arends couldn’t get a squeeze bunt down. Arends and Kim Ragazzo would each pick up infield singles in the inning too but were stranded on base. Dominican eventually scored in the fourth inning when Ragazzo and Lizzie Hogan each doubled, and Jackie Gonzalez singled.
In game two, Florida Southern scored twice in the bottom of the first with Alexander and Pemberton teaming up for both of those runs. It was a single and stolen base by Alexander that got the Mocs started, and a ground ball by Bailey that got her to third. Pemberton then put down a perfect sacrifice bunt that got Alexander in for a 1-0 lead. After taking second on another ground out, Pemberton scored on back-to-back illegal pitches by Ragazzo.
The Mocs went up 3-0 in the second after Lieneck singled and stole second. Again a bunt helped bring in the run, this one from Stearns, who reached safely for an infield single while the ball was thrown away for an error that brought Lieneck in from second.
A pair of 2-out RBI singles by Ragazzo and Paige Berzak brought the Chargers within 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Mocs got one of those back in the bottom half. Once more it was Alexander and Pemberton, with a base hit by Bailey helping them out. Pemberton drove in the run with a ground out to second, and the Mocs nearly scored again when Gonzalez singled to center, but Arends threw Bailey out at the plate.
Leading 4-2 in the top of the seventh, the Mocs turned to freshman Hannah Loyer (Bradenton, Fla.) to close the game, but the Chargers used three singles to score two runs that tied the game. The last of those came when Hogan went up the middle with two out to drive in both runs.
In the bottom of the seventh though, the Moccasins responded with four singles to claim the win. The first three by Lieneck, Stearns and Alexander came before the Chargers could get an out and loaded the bases. The Chargers then turned a 3-2-4 double play and nearly escaped, but Pemberton came through for the Moccasins. Her slowly hit ball up the middle was fielded by shortstop Vanessa Parker as she tumbled to the ground and had no play at first while Stearns touched the plate for the winning run.
Florida Southern returns to conference play this weekend in Boca Raton when it takes on Lynn University on Friday at 3 p.m. in the first of a 3-game series.
