Box Score CLEARWATER – Priscilla Gonzalez did it again, and with their senior designated player delivering yet another big late-inning hit, Florida Southern was able to win again. Gonzalez's 2-run single in the top of the eighth inning capped a come-back win by the Moccasins who improved to 3-0 with their 5-3 win over Colorado Christian.
Gonzalez had three RBI against the Cougars (1-2), giving her a total of seven through the first three games. In a 6-3 win over West Florida on Friday, Gonzalez (Miami, Fla.) had a 2-run double in the sixth inning that blew the game open, and in a 4-2 win over Southwest Baptist it was her 2-run single in the fourth that put the Mocs ahead.
Against Colorado Christian, Florida Southern trailed 2-0 going into the top of the sixth inning before erupting for three runs to take their first lead of the game. They put their first three batters on base with three straight singles by junior Jordan Alexander (Valrico, Fla.), senior Gianni Artidiello (Miami, Fla.) and senior Jessica Lanci (Orlando, Fla.). The Cougars got a force-out at the plate for the first out before Gonzalez drove in the Mocs' first run with a sacrifice fly. It might have been even more if not for a diving catch by right fielder Alexa Coffing that took away a potential double.
Nevertheless, the fly ball cut the CCU lead to one and junior Leah Pemberton (Valrico, Fla.) put the Mocs ahead with a 2-run single up the middle.
That 3-2 lead didn't last long as the Cougars tied the score when Kristina Billante led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to center. That was the last hit they'd have off FSC pitcher Brandi Jones, however. The sophomore from Snellville, Georgia struck out the side after the home run, retired the side in order in the seventh, and worked around a walk and the tie-break runner in the eighth.
With the tie-breaker in effect for extra innings, the Mocs got to start the top of the eighth with Alexander on second. Lanci walked with one out before a ground ball hit by junior Maggie Roberts (Lakeland, Fla.) got under the shortstop's glove to load the bases for Gonzalez. The senior DP promptly singled into right center, driving in Alexander and Lanci for a 5-3 lead.
The Cougars also got to start their half of the inning with a runner at second, but Jones got a pair of tough catches in the outfield from senior leftfielder Kylee Stearns (Lakeland, Fla.) and Alexander in right. A walk to Billante was also left on base as Jones closed out the game with a foul pop-up. Now 2-0 on the season, Jones gave up three runs on five hits, with 12 strikeouts and two walks.
Two of the hits against Jones were doubles by CCU leadoff hitter Jessica Romine, and one of those led to two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. She drove in one of those runs herself and then scored on a run-down play when Danielle Romine was caught stealing at second.
The Moccasins had eight hits off CCU pitcher Tana Feiner, coming from seven different players.
