ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Florida Southern College beach volleyball took on Eckerd College and Palm Beach Atlantic on Day One of the Battle on the Bay tournament in St. Petersburg, Fla. The Mocs dropped both matches by a 3-2 final. Southern now owns a 3-4 record on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Eckerd 3, Florida Southern 2
- The No. 5 pair of sophomore Bethany Jones and Madelyn Grim lost their first set by a close margin as they fell 21-19 and then dropped the second set 21-15.
- Southern's No. 3 pair of junior Kayla Trefren and sophomore Haley Goodrich earned the point for the Mocs as Eckerd's No. 3 pair withdrew in the first set with the Trefren and Goodrich leading 13-6 at the stopping point.
- The Mocs No. 4 pair of sophomore Kennedy Mathews and freshman Linzy Bozeman lost the first set 21-17 and bounced back to win the second set by the same 21-17 score. The two would drop the final set 15-10 as Eckerd jumped out to a 2-1 lead.
- The No. 2 pairing of junior Erica Ronda and sophomore Celia Greco lost the first set in extra points, 25-23 and would take the next two sets, 21-13 and 15-13 to even the match score at 2-2.
- The No. 1 grouping of senior Katie Bergeron and grad student Mandee Eberle fell in two sets as they lost 21-13 in set one and 21-17 in the second set.
Palm Beach Atlantic 3, Florida Southern 2
- The Mocs' head coach Hyrum Keime kept his pairings for the second match the same as the first. The number one pairing was the only court to go to three sets as the other four all finish with two-set sweeps.
- Southern would earn victories from the No. 2 pairing of Ronda and Greco (21-15, 21-19) and the No. 3 pairing of Trefren and Goodrich (21-16, 22-20).
- The Mocs would fall in straight sets at No. 4 as Mathews and Bozeman lost both sets by a 21-17.
- One the number five court the Mocs pairing of Jones and Grim lost 21-12 in set one and 21-17 in the second set.
- The only pair to go to three sets saw Bergeron and Eberle take set one 22-20 but would fall in the next two sets 21-12 and 15-5.
