Mocs Minutes: Florida Southern Hoops on the Road in Tampa Wednesday

  • Florida Southern goes back on the road off of a home win of 78-69 over conference opponent Nova Southeastern. Julia Jenike and Mackenzie Steele both had 16 points on the night, with Jenike going 10 for 11 on free throws. Jenike had a milestone night when she reached her 1,000th point as a Moc late in the third quarter. Jenike rounded out her offensive performance while also leading the team defensively with seven rebounds and four steals.
  • On the season, Whitney Jacob continues to lead the Moccasin offense, averaging 16.9 points per game and 236 points overall, making her second in the conference in scoring. After hitting her 1,000th career point as a Moccasin, Julia Jenike sits third in the conference in three point percentage shooting 0.414. Sara Wohlgemuth is the sole leader for the Mocs in assists, with a total of 43 assists, averaging 2.9 assists per game.
  • Julia Jenike leads the Mocs scoring in conference play, averaging 15.1 points per game, followed by Whitney Jacob also in double digits averaging 14.6. Ashley Shell leads the Moccasin's defense in conference play, averaging 6.2 rebounds
  • Tampa returns home to the Bob Martinez Athletic Center off a road win against conference opponent Barry this past Saturday. Aliyah Abney and LaShayla Wright-Ponder led the Spartans to their 74-56 victory, with Abney tallying 25 points and Wright-Ponder with 19.
  • For the Spartans, Wright-Ponder and Abney are the two players to watch as they lead the team in points per game with 14.4 and 14.2 respectively.
  • In conference play, four players average double digits as Abney (15.4) and Wright-Ponder (13.5) continue to lead the way, followed by Dori Nagy (12.3) and Melijah Sullivan (11.4). Through nine conference competitions, the Spartans average 70.2 points per game, with a field goal percentage of 46.6.
  • HISTORY Florida Southern holds an all time series lead of 66-37 over the Spartans as the two face off in their 103rd meeting on Wednesday night. The Mocs lead at Tampa with an away record of 28-19. Florida Southern will be looking to defeat the Spartans, as the last meeting between these two teams, the Mocs fell to the Spartans by one point with a score of 75-74.

  • Florida Southern Florida Southern nearly took down #3/3 Nova Southeastern in a 83-73 score Saturday night where Tarik Mckelphin shined with 26 points and seven rebounds and three blocks. E.J. Dambreville added 18 points and nine rebounds, while Xavier Rhodes was the third Moc in double-digits (10). Nova Southeastern controlled the lead for most of the game, but the Mocs outscored them 39-35 in the second half. The Mocs were within two points of the Sharks with under five minutes to go, but Nova Southeastern held on. Sekou Sylla led the Sharks with 28 points and 10 rebounds, with RJ Sunahara (16) and Kobe Rodgers (11) each in double-digits. Dambreville continues to be a force in the paint for the Moccasins, leading the conference in defensive rebounds per game with 8.27 and sits at sixth in all of Division II for that statistic. In total rebounds, Dambreville averages 10.93, which is good for seventh in the country. The Dorchester, Mass. native is averaging a double-double in his fourth season with Florida Southern, posting 14.0 points per game to go along with the rebounds.
  • On the season, the Mocs average 80.4 points a game with Rhodes leading the team averaging 14.9 points a game. After a big game against Nova Southeastern, Mckelphin is second on the team in averaged points with 14.3, as Dambreville and Jack Casale are right behind with 14.0 and 13.8, respectively.
  • In conference play, Dambreville finds his mark to lead the Mocs with 16.3 points a game. His 11.1 rebounds average in conference play is best in the SSC. Excelling from beyond the arc, Casale leads the conference with 3.9 made 3-pointers a game against conference opponents.
  • Tampa Tampa just outlasted No. 17 Barry in overtime Saturday, 104-98 in Miami Shores. Tampa is 7-0 in their last seven games, while Florida Southern is just 1-6. Max Jones led the Spartans with 38 points in the bout, as Tyson Leitao and Bryan William added 19 and 18 points, respectively, in the win.
  • On the season, the Spartans average 82.6 points a game while shooting 46.7% from the field. Jones leads Tampa with 22.5 points a game, an impressive average that is second in the conference. Averaging 9.1 steals a game, the Spartans pose a threat in the turnover margin for the Mocs.
  • In conference play, the Spartans continually boost their field goal percentage, shown by their leader Jones in a 38-point contest to beat #17 Barry in overtime. With an average of 18.1 assists a game against conference opponents, Tampa average 86.5 points a game, compared to just 80.6 point average by Florida Southern in the same situation.
  • HISTORY The Mocs lost the last contest against Tampa in a 94-84 battle last March. The Spartans sit in second place in conference standings posting a 11-3 (7-3) overall record. In the last seven meetings between these two teams, however, the Mocs are 6-1, the most recent win coming on February 26th, 2020. Dambreville and Rhodes combined for 22 points, while Tampa's Brent Duncan, Derrick Felder, and Martin Lakovic combined to contribute 43 points in the thrilling 90-89 Florida Southern victory. The Mocs hold the series lead with 92 wins and 62 losses. While dominating at home, Florida Southern is even with Tampa in when on the road.
