Mocs Minutes: Basketballs Host Florida Tech Wednesday

  • Florida Southern continues action at home after defeating Barry 75-59. Julia Jenike was just one point shy of tying her career-high with 31 points against Barry. SSC defensive player of the week, Whitney Jacob, earned her fourth double-double of the season with 21 points and 10 boards. Mackenzie Steele followed along with 14 points to round out the double-digit scoring for the Mocs.
  • On the season, Whitney Jacob leads the team in scoring and still sits second in the conference with a 17.4 per game average and 279 overall points. Julia Jenike is first in the conference, averaging .463 from beyond the 3-point arc and averaging 15.4 points per game. Sara Wohlgemuth comes fifth for the SSC for assists, averaging 1.4 assists per game.
  • In conference play, Mackenzie Steele, Whitney Jacob, and Julia Jenike all have the hot hand as of late, averaging 13.0, 16.5, and 20.4 points per game, respectively, in the last four contests.
  • Florida Tech has proven their ability to stay in close games amongst their in-state rivals, despite their winless conference record. Two weeks ago, the Panthers took Barry to triple overtime before falling by 3 points. On Jan. 15, they lost to Lynn by just six points. Earlier this season, the team dropped a road match against Palm Beach Atlantic by five points. Two of their conference losses were forfeits, to Embry-Riddle and Eckerd.
  • For the Panthers, has the worst rebounding margin in the league, at -7.4. That's good news for Florida Southern, who are 6-0 this season when out-rebounding their opponent. In their matchup earlier this season, the Mocs notched 35 rebounds to the Panthers' 26.
  • In conference play, This is the second meeting between these two teams this season, with the first coming on December 1st. Florida Southern won 81-62 on the road to earn their first conference win of the season. Whitney Jacob scored 19 points while Madlena Gerke picked up 14 of her own, a career high. The team shot 50% from field goal range, a feat that has only been accomplished twice so far this season. Florida Southern also shot 14-29 from three-point range, a tie for the most 3-pointers in a game this season.

  • Florida Southern looks to bounce back from the loss column, and even the series with the Panthers, after suffering a 100-70 loss to no. 25 Barry on Jan. 22. In the setback, Luke Anderson and Jadin Booth paced the team with 12 points apiece off the bench while E.J. Dambreville added nine with a trio of players at seven. Tarik Mckelphin, one of the players with three points in the game, led the team with 10 rebounds, all coming on the defensive end.
  • On the season, Xavier Rhodes is continuing to lead the team in scoring with 14.1 points per game (ppg) while Tarik Mckelphin has inched closer at 13.6 ppg, Jack Casale at 13.4 ppg, and E.J. Dambreville at 13.2 ppg. Dambreville leads the team in rebounding with 170 total for 10.0 per game. As a team, the Mocs average 80.2 ppg while snagging 37.7 rebounds per game (rpg) to sit seventh and fifth in the league overall, respectively.
  • In conference play, E.J. Dambreville leads all FSC players with 14.5 ppg and 9.5 rpg. Xavier Rhodes (14.3 ppg), Tarik Mckelphin (14.2 ppg), and Jack Casale (12.9 ppg) all average double-figures while Jadin Booth sits just on the outside at 9.2 ppg. As a team through 11 conference games, Florida Southern averages 80.2 ppg and hauls in 39.3 rpg, which puts the team seventh and third, respectively across the league.
  • Florida Tech travels to the Jenkins Field House on a five-game losing streak. The Panthers are on an eight-game losing streak in conference play after suffering three forfeits to Embry-Riddle (Dec. 30), Eckerd (Jan. 2), and Palm Beach Atlantic (Jan. 5) while carrying four regular losses to Tampa (Jan. 8), Barry (Jan. 12), Lynn (Jan. 15), and the most recent 78-61 loss to Saint Leo (Jan. 22). In the setback to the Lions, Florida Tech's Niall Harris led all scorers with 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting from the floor, and completed his double-double with 10 rebounds.
  • On the season, Sesan Russell leads the team in scoring at 15.8 ppg with 206 on the season in 13 games of action. Mekhii Noble is second on the team, and averages a double-double with 15.7 ppg and 11.6 rpg. Sean Houpt and Runako Ziegler both average 13.8 ppg for the Panthers. As a team, Florida Tech averages 80.3 points per game and 42.0 rebounds, which rank sixth and seventh in league overall standings, respectively.
  • In conference play, Mekhii Noble continues his average of a double-double in conference play at 15.7 ppg and 10.5 rpg where he second in the SSC in rebounds per game, edging the Mocs' E.J. Dambreville (9.5). Three others average double-figures in the eight SSC games the Panthers have played in, Sean Houpt (15.5 ppg), Runako Ziegler (15.4 ppg), and Sesan Russell (11.3 ppg).
  • HISTORY: Between the two teams, the Mocs hold a 69-27 overall series record, including the first meeting this year in which the Panthers won 85-80 in Melbourne. Florida Southern and Florida Tech each had a pair of players score 20-plus points where the Mocs saw Jadin Booth (21) and Tarik Mckelphin (20) reach the mark while the Panthers saw Mekhii Noble (25), and Sean Houpt (24) go over 20-points in the Tech win. Inside the George W. Jenkins Field House, Florida Southern holds a 34-10 advantage over Florida Tech with the most recent win inside Jenkins Field House coming back on Feb. 8, 2020 where the Mocs won 112-82 behind Jack Rauch's 29 point performance. Sesan Russell dropped 34 points in that loss for Florida Tech back in 2020.
