Mocs Minutes: Basketballs Travel to Miami Shores for Weekend Action

  • Florida Southern saw their five game win streak come to an end after a hard fought battle against #10/21 Eckerd on Wednesday night. The Mocs will turn their focus to Saturday when they hit the road to head south for its first SSC road match in Miami Shores against Barry. Seven Mocs scored in the battle against the Tritons as three scored in double-digits in senior Domenica Zamora, graduate student Ashley Shell, and freshman Sydney Gomes.
  • The Mocs have played four games in eight days and are back on the road for two conference games before hosting two non-conference teams in the annual Mocs Christmas Classic. Shell is leading the Mocs so far in 2022-23 as she is third in the SSC in scoring with 123 points for an average of 17.6 points per game. Reigning SSC defensive player of the week Zamora is also ranked in the top 25 for the conference averaging 12.4 points per game followed by sophomore Arielle Dabu with 10.6 points per game. Gomes is just outside of the double-digit scoring average with 9.1 ppg.
  • As a team, FSC is averaging 76.0 points per game, while their opponents average 63.6. From the two conference matchups the Mocs are the top team in the SSC in team free throw percentage hitting 31 of 34 shots for a .912 average. Florida Southern is currently fifth in the conference just behind two teams who have only played one conference game thus far.
  • Barry is on a one game win streak after defeating Florida National on Nov. 29 with a score of 65-36 in Miami Shores. The Bucs have only played in one SSC game where they fell to Tampa 75-69 on Nov. 20. In non conference action they are 3-3 opening the season with a win against Shorter 85-47 before falling to Shorter 85-47 in the SSC/GSC Challenge. The Buccaneers also fell to Clayton State 70-67, before splitting in their own Thanksgiving Classic with a win against Limestone 79-70 and losing to Kentucky Wesleyan 81-76.
  • Two Buccaneers are averaging double-digit scoring as junior Chiara Fusari is leading the pack with 13.9 average followed by senior Ashleigh Pink averaging 10.9 points per game. Fusari individually is leading the SSC with the most points in a game scoring 34-points against Tampa. Sophomore Ana Gascon leads the team with 5.0 rebounds per contest earning a season-high of nine boards in the Bucs last contest against Florida National.
  • The Buccaneers are shooting 43.1 percent from the field this season while allowing their opponents to connect on 39.6 percent of their shots. Barry's average drops to 33.0 percent when shooting from beyond the 3-point line while the Bucs have held their opponents to just 37.9 percent shooting from 3-point range. In Barry's lone SSC contest this season, the Bucs shot just 37.8percent from the field including 45.5 percent from 3-point range.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Bucs have met 75 times on the basketball court with FSC holding a 56-19 edge in the series. Florida Southern and Barry split the series in 2021-22 as Mocs won at home 75-59 but fell in Miami Shores 61-55. In the 2020-21 season the Mocs fell to the Bucs in double overtime with a score of 79-70 at Barry.

  • No. 14/16 Florida Southern heads south for its first SSC road test of the season at Barry Saturday afternoon. The Mocs are coming off an 88-79 victory over Eckerd Wednesday night at home. FSC saw nine different players score in the victory over the Tritons, led by redshirt sophomores Jadin Booth and Wes Bongiorni who each finished with 16 points.
  • Booth is the scoring leader for the Mocs so far in 2022-23 as he ranks second in the Sunshine State Conference with 21.4 points per game. Redshirt senior E.J. Dambreville is not far behind as he ranks second on the team and fourth in the SSC with 19.3 ppg. Bongiorni rounds out the double-digit scoring average trio for the Mocs as he has scored 10.7 ppg. this season. Three other Mocs, including redshirt sophomore Luke Anderson (9.9 ppg.), redshirt sophomore Tray Alexander (9.7 ppg.) and junior Connor Raines (9.4 ppg.), are averaging just shy of double-figures. On the boards it has once again been Dambreville leading the effort for the Mocs as he is averaging 9.1 rebounds per contest and already has three double-doubles this season. Anderson (6.0 rpg.) and Bongiorni (5.4 rpg.) round out the top three for FSC.
  • The Mocs have eclipsed 100 points twice this season, a 100-98 win at Clayton State and the 112-91 win over Anderson. With the pair of wins, FSC moved to 156-7 all-time in program history when surpassing the century mark.
  • So far through two SSC contests, the Mocs have been led in scoring in league play by Booth who has averaged 18.0 points per game in the victories over PBA and Eckerd. Dambreville (15.5 ppg.), Bongiorni (12.0 ppg.) and Alexander (11.0 ppg.) are also averaging double-figures in SSC contests this season while Dambreville is averaging a double-double with 10.0 rebounds per contest as well.
  • Barry sits at 2-2 on the season through four contests. The Buccaneers secured victories over Fort Lauderdale (81-65) and Florida National (91-61) while falling to both Tampa (72-69) and St. Thomas (83-82). The Bucs have yet to register an NCAA DII victory this season. Barry is coming off a 2021-22 season in which the Bucs went 20-9 including winning their opening seven contests.
  • Five Buccaneers are averaging double-figures led by senior Jaron Williams who has scored 12.7 points per contest this season. Junior James Montgomery is second on the team with 12.3 points per game while sophomore Nick Anderson sits in third at 12.0 ppg. Senior Michael Schaefer leads the team with 14.0 rebounds per contest but has only appeared in one contest and that was the season opener versus Fort Lauderdale. Montgomery ranks second on the squad with 9.3 boards per game and is nearly averaging a double-double.
  • The Buccaneers are shooting 42.0 percent from the field this season while allowing their opponents to connect on 44.9 percent of their shots. Barry's average drops to 33.0 percent when shooting from beyond the 3-point line while the Bucs have held their opponents to just 30.7 percent shooting from 3-point range. In Barry's lone SSC contest this season, the Bucs shot just 35.3 percent from the field including 37.0 percent from 3-point range. Tampa on the other hand shot 47.8 percent from the field including an impressive 53.3 percent from three.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Bucs have met 80 times on the basketball court with FSC holding a 56-24 edge in the series. Barry won both match-ups between the two programs in 2021-22 including a 100-70 victory in Lakeland and a 107-93 win in Miami Shores. The opening victory of the 2021-22 season snapped a five-game win streak in the series by the Mocs. Barry was led by Michael Schaefer in the 100-70 victory in Lakeland as he scored a game-high 30 points while collecting 10 rebounds. In the 107-93 decision in Miami Shores, Schaefer led once again with 23 points and four rebounds. For the Mocs, Luke Anderson and Jadin Booth led the team with 12 points each in the loss at home while Booth led the way in Miami Shores with 22 points.
