Mocs Minutes: Softball and Basketballs in Action Wednesday

  • Florida Southern Softball has started the season off hot going undefeated during the Flagler tournament over the past weekend. The Mocs started the tournament Friday night with a win against Georgia Southwestern for a 6-1 decision. FSC continued to dominate the tournament with a 1-0 win over host Flagler before a come from behind win against Georgia Southwestern 9-4.
  • On the season, sophomore Skyler Ralstin is currently leading the Mocs with a .571 batting average going 4-for-7 over the weekend with three runs scored and two RBIs. Freshman Destiny Colgate made her collegiate debut with a smash going a perfect 3-for-3 on the first day with her first at bat being an RBI double followed by a solo homer and another double. In the circle, Mel Rogers opened up the tournament, sending the Saints down in order with three strikeouts to start off the season for the Mocs. Cat Buckner and Tiana Hernandez also dominated in the circle as both support a 0.00 ERA as each had five strikeouts, while Rogers struck out eight.
  • Flagler opened up their season the same way the Mocs did with a win, but the Saints would fall in their next two games to start off their season 1-2. Flagler split with Queens, who the Mocs were scheduled to play on Sunday but was canceled due to the weather. The Mocs and Flagler have seen each other already this early season and the Mocs have the upper hand defeating the Saints 1-0 fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth.
  • On the season, Flagler is led by sophomore Paige Maseda who went 4-for-9 with two runs scored and a double. Junior Kyleigh Taylor hit a 3 run-homer to open up the tournament as Madelyn Wise collected her first win with a shutout striking out eight batters.
  • HISTORY Prior to the meeting over the weekend the Saints were on a 3-0 winning streak against the Mocs as Flagler holds a 8-15 record over FSC.

  • Florida Southern The Mocs committed just five turnovers in their win at Rollins on Wednesday and followed it up with nine at home against Tampa. The team tacked on 20 assists in the win over Rollins, improving their assist-turnover ratio to 1.06, best in the conference and 35th in the country. FSC continues to improve their assist-turnover ratio as the Mocs dished out 21 assists with Sara Wohlgemuth leading Florida Southern with seven The win over Lynn gives FSC their fifth consecutive win as their last loss was to Tampa on Jan. 19.
  • On the season, graduate students Julia Jenike and Whitney Jacob are both sitting in the top of the conference standings in scoring. Jenike is currently third for a 16.5 average, followed by Jacob in fourth supporting a 15.6. Jenike continues to sit first in SSC with .471 3FG%. FSC is currently averaging 69.6 points per game moving up from fourth to second in the conference in offense.
  • In conference play, Whitney Jacob continues to lead the Mocs with 16.9 scoring followed by Julia Jenike with 15.3 for a double-digit scoring average. >
  • #14/19 Tampa is on a three game winning streak, their last loss being against Nova at Tampa for a 67-58 loss, the teams only second SSC loss this season. The Spartans most recent win was against Embry-Riddle on Saturday with a 63-41 decision at home as well. Tampa is currently sitting in first place in the SSC with a 12-2 conference record while the Mocs sit in third behind Tampa and Eckerd.
  • On the season, Tampa is shooting a .474 from the field and a .333 from beyond the arc. Aliyah Abney is leading Tampa averaging 14.4 points per game followed by LaShayla Wright-Ponder (12.5), Melijah Sullivan (11.5), Dori Nagy (10.9) to close out double-digit scoring.
  • Last time up, Tampa was ranked #16/18 and is currently sitting at #19 when the two teams played. The Mocs only fell by five-points and FSC outshot the Spartans from the 3-point arc for .414 percent to Tampas .333 percent. The score was tied five times, and saw seven lead changes.

  • Florida Southern hosts Tampa with a four-game win streak intact, including the most recent 84-74 win over Lynn on Feb. 5. In the win, Luke Anderson led the team with a career-high 22 points and notched seven rebounds. E.J. Dambreville posted another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds while Xavier Rhodes joined in the double-double fun with 13 points and 11 assists. Jack Casale chipped in 14 points on the night with Jadin Booth adding 10.
  • On the season, the Mocs average 80.6 points per game and are led by a quartet of players that average double-figures. Dambreville leads the group with 14.5 points per game (ppg), followed by Rhodes at 13.8, Casale in third at 12.7, and Tarik Mckelphin at 12.1. Dambreville nearly averages a double-double with 9.9 rebounds a game.
  • In conference play, Dambreville's average increases to 16.1 ppg as Rhodes stays even at 13.8. The duo are ranked in the top-20 of the league's leading scorers. As a squad, the Mocs are fifth in scoring per game at 80.9 and are slowly chipping away and holding their opponents to under 80 points in the last four game.
  • Tampa dropped its last contest 89-82 on the road at Embry-Riddle on Feb. 5. De'Andre Harvey led the team with 25 points in 24 minutes off the bench for the Spartans. Bryan Williams contributed 15 points while Martin Lakovic added 14 points.
  • On the season, Tampa averages 81.1 points a game led by Max Jones who holds a 21.8 ppg average ahead of Lakovic, 11.0, Williams, 10.9, and Derrick Felder, 10.6. Lakovic is the team leader in rebounds per game with 8.1 boards a game.
  • In conference play, the Spartans average shifts to 82.7 ppg while Max Jones leads UT in scoring with an average of 22.8 a game. Williams, 11.8, Felder, 11.4, and Lakovic, 11.1, all contribute double-figures in league play.
  • HISTORY Just seven games ago, the Mocs claimed an 87-83 road win over the then-receiving votes Tampa Spartans to take a quick 1-0 lead in the season series. Overall Florida Southern holds an 97-55 mark in the series between the two rivals and carries a 55-24 mark in games played in Jenkins Field House.
