Mocs Minutes: Home Lacrosse Doubleheader Highlights Midweek Action

  • Florida Southern returns to Winter Park after a series sweep of Palm Beach Atlantic University this past weekend. The Mocs started with a 1-0 win on Friday, built by a solo homer by Jared DeSantolo and great pitching by Nathan Madej, reigning SSC Pitcher of the Week. Florida Southern followed up with back-to-back 10-2 wins on Saturday afternoon with a three-run homer by Duncan Hunter in game one, and three home runs in game two, with one each by Joe Raffaele, Jeff Liquori, and Nathan Chevalier.
  • In the conference, Liquori continues to shine as top two among conference leaders in slugging percentage, OPS, and runs scored. With his homer on Saturday, Liquori sits with 13 home runs on the season, with Hunter right behind with 10. Chevalier sits in sixth in the conference with a .375 batting average.
  • On the mound, the Mocs had a great weekend, highlighted by Madej's third SSC Pitcher of the Week nod so far this season. Florida Southern went consecutive weeks with the honor as Dawson Lane was selected last week. Aric McAtee added a win this weekend with a team-high five wins, as did Lane in game two of the doubleheader.
  • Rollins will host the Mocs for the fourth time this season after winning a conference series, 2-1, over Barry University this past weekend. The Tars won the Friday game with a three-run homer by Meehan, and two-run homer by Coleman as the highlight. A close game through six innings of the first doubleheader game took a turn for the Bucs advantage after they scored five in the bottom of the sixth to take a win from Rollins. The Tars responded with a game two doubleheader win, holding off a late Barry surge and 5-3 score.
  • The Tars continue to be led by Jeslyn Whitehead, Chase Achuff, and Adams Torres, with each batting over .300 on the season so far. A combined .284 batting average on the season, the Tars have 60 doubles by the team. Achuff is tied for second in the conference with 12 doubles on the season. Nick Santucci leads the team in home runs, with nine so far this season. On the mound, Rollins is led by Jaylyn Whitehead with a 1.11 ERA and Austin Long with a .158 opposing batting average.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs extended their overall record against Rollins to 154-80 after a 2-1 series win over the Tars nearly two weeks ago to upset the then No. 9 team in the nation. A close match each day, the Mocs won 2-1 in the doubleheader sweep of the Tars to rebound from a Friday loss and win the series.

  • Florida Southern looks to tally another win over a ranked opponent as they continue to face tough conference competition, often ranked in the top teams of the nation. After a 4-0 loss to Barry last week, the Mocs ended senior day on a high note as they upset No. 28 Embry-Riddle 4-3 last week. After splitting the first two flights of doubles, pairing of Mathilda Vidgren and Laura Vetter rallied to win their court and take the doubles point. A close game in singles, Vidgren and Flor Salerno won their flights with three wins going to the Eagles. In an epic comeback of set two, Olivia Bryant sealed the upset as she won the tiebreaker point in set two for the match point and Moccasin victory.
  • Tampa hosts Florida Southern after a 4-3 win over Georgia College to rebound from their loses to No. 2 Nova Southeastern and No. 17 Flagler College last week. Last time out, the Spartans swept the doubles point over Georgia College before a close singles battle. Dakota Busch, Corbin Dorsey, and Savannah Williams won for Tampa to seal the match win. Tampa is led by No. 24 Maeva Roquebert in singles, and No. 26 Maria Khomchenko and Anine Wilberg for doubles.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold a 76-4 advantage over the Spartans in their overall meetings. Currently riding a 28-game win streak over Tampa, the Mocs won 5-2 the last time these two teams met, last March in Lakeland, when the Mocs were ranked No. 18 according to the ITA poll at the time.

  • No. 9 Florida Southern welcomes in Saint Leo Wednesday afternoon as the Mocs look to rebound from just their second loss of the season on the road at nationally-ranked Rollins this past Saturday.
  • Sophomore Abby McFerren leads the Mocs in assists and points with 22 helpers and 45 points thanks to her 23 goals. Senior Hailey Daleo continues to be the sharpshooter on the squad with a team-best 30 goals this season. She also has 13 assists to sit second in points with 43. Madison Tare (26), Brenna Smith (25), Lizzy Lynch (21) and Ellie Griffin (21) all have 20-plus goals this season while Marlee Moon Gaddy sits just on the doorstep with 19.
  • Griffin has been a ball hawk on draw controls collecting 51 so far this season. Freshman Maria Reeves is just behind with 41. Fifth-year senior Abby Hammond has been the leader in defense with 17 caused turnovers in 2022.
  • The Mocs have a pair of standouts in goal with graduate student Brittany Iamele and senior Patricia Werker each seeing significant time. Iamele has a 4-0 record in the cage with a 6.56 goals against average and a .522 saves percentage to go along with her 24 saves. Werker has a 5-2 record this season with a 12.70 goals against average and a .441 saves percentage. She has made 67 saves so far this season.
  • Saint Leo is 5-8 this season including 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play. The Lions are coming off a 10-9 victory over Florida Tech at home this past Saturday.
  • Sophomore Fiona McLaughlin leads the Lions in goals and points with 34 goals, two assists and 36 points. Junior Lia Lamendola sits second on the squad in both goals (25) and points (33) while senior Meghan Bomleny leads the team in assists with 23. Freshman Maria Palomba has collected a team-best 120 draw controls so far this season. Freshman Makayla Goetz has seen the most action in goal for the Lions and boasts a 4-3 record this season. She has a 12.46 goals against average and has made 72 saves with a .407 saves percentage.
  • HISTORY: Wednesday night will be the 12th meeting between the Mocs and Lions on the lacrosse field. Florida Southern has won all 11 previous meetings including earlier this season when the Mocs won 19-13 over the then-23rd-ranked Lions in Lakeland.

  • No. 12 Florida Southern looks to rebound from its first Sunshine State Conference loss this season after falling on the road at No. 1 Tampa. The Mocs road does not get much easier as Florida Southern welcomes in No. 10 Rollins who has just one loss on the season.
  • Junior Jeff Atlas continues to lead the team in points and assists while ranking second in goals. He has 33 goals, 40 assists and 73 points through 13 games this season. He currently ranks first in the Sunshine State Conference in assists per game (3.08), second in points per game (5.62) and seventh in goals per game (2.54). Junior Sean Nolan leads the team in goals with 39 while ranking third in the conference in goals per game with 3.00.
  • Senior Kevin Horwitz continues to give the Mocs an advantage at the X as he has won 65.9 percent of his faceoffs (234-355) this season. He currently has 133 ground balls this season and ranks second in the SSC in ground balls per game (10.23) while leading the conference in face off winning percentage (.659).
  • The fifth-year senior continues to re-write the Florida Southern record book as he holds both the career records for ground balls (405) and faceoffs won (796). He has also already broken the single season ground balls record in 2022 with his 133. He surpassed Dan Krispinsky (2011-14) who had 90 ground balls during the 2013 season. He also just recently set the single season record for faceoffs won with 234 so far in 2022. Andrew Fisher (2014-15) held the previous mark of 199 faceoffs won in 2015.
  • In goal for the Mocs, junior Maxwell Freestone is 7-3 on the season following the loss at No. 1 Tampa on the road. Freestone has made 112 saves this season and has an 11.71 goals against average with a .507 saves percentage. He currently ranks fourth in the SSC in GAA and fifth in saves percentage.
  • The Mocs have several high rankings in the NCAA Division II men's lacrosse statistics. As a team, the Mocs lead the country in total assists (127) and total points (330) while ranking fifth in ground balls (505), seventh in assists per game (9.77), eighth in points per game (25.38) and faceoff winning percentage (.649). They also have top-10 marks in caused turnovers per game (9th, 11.54), opponent clear percentage (10th, .753) and scoring offense (10th, 15.62). Individually, Jeff Atlas and Kevin Horwitz hold top-five rankings. Atlas ranks fourth in assists per game (3.08) while Horwitz ranks fifth in ground balls per game (10.23).
  • No. 10 Rollins is 10-1 this season with its lone loss coming versus No. 1 Tampa on the road, a 15-11 defeat. The Tars have not played any other ranked opponents so far this season other than Tampa.
  • Senior Bailey Pringle leads the Tars in goals and points this season with 32 goals, 14 assists and 46 points. Senior Marshall Ellison is not far behind with 25 goals, 15 assists and 40 points. Freshman Grant Hansen leads the team in assists with 19. Freshman Thomas Garvin and sophomore Mark Ranieri have split time at the 'X'. Garvin has won 91 of his 158 faceoffs (.576) while Ranieri has 58 wins in 130 attempts (.446). Freshman Bradley Peterson has emerged as the starting keeper for the Tars. He has a 7-1 record with a 9.65 goals against average. He has made 85 saves this season and has a .515 saves percentage.
  • HISTORY: Wednesday night will be the 18th meeting between the Mocs and Tars on the lacrosse field. Florida Southern has a slight 8-6 lead in the series but has lost the last four meetings between the two squads. The last Florida Southern win in the series came April 15, 2017 in Winter Park. The last win in Lakeland for the Mocs in the series came all the way back on March 1, 2014, an 18-11 victory. The Tars have won three-straight in Lakeland.
