WINTER PARK, Fla. – The No. 5 Florida Southern College women's lacrosse team fell to No. 9 Rollins College on Saturday afternoon, 16-12, for just their second loss of the season.
Â
The Moccasins (9-2, 1-1 SSC) rallied after trailing for the majority of the second half, ultimately falling just short to the undefeated Tars (12-0, 2-0 SSC).
Â
Hailey Daleo scored the game's first goal, as the teams exchanged tallies in the early-goings of the first quarter.
Brenna Smith briefly gave the Mocs another lead before Rollins scored three unanswered goals to go back up 4-2 in the first quarter.
Â
Madison Tare cut the deficit with her first of four goals before the Tars' Caroline Gastonguay scored her second of the game to give the home team a 5-3 lead at the end of the quarter. Gastonguay wound up scoring four goals with three assists on the day.
Â
The Moccasins opened the second quarter with four straight goals—
Lizzy Lynch found the back of the net twice, while
Abby McFerren and
Katie Yeagle each scored to put the team up 7-5 early in the quarter.
Â
Rollins responded with a goal late in the half to cut the deficit to just one, and
Patricia Werker made a great save on a free position shot at the final horn of the first half, as the Mocs went into the break with a 7-6 lead.
Â
The Tars would go on to score three straight coming out of the half and outscored the Moccasins 5-1 in the quarter to bring an 11-8 lead into the final frame of play. Tare had the lone score of the period for Florida Southern.
Â
After another Rollins goal to open the fourth quarter, Lynch and Smith each scored to bring the game to 12-10 with over 13 minutes to play, but that's as close as it would get.
Â
Over the course of the final stretch, the Tars were able to hold off the Moccasins with four goals to put the game out of reach despite two more goals from
Madison Tare to bring the score to 16-12 at the final horn.
Â
The Moccasins fall to 9-2 on the season and will return to Berend Field this Wednesday at 4 p.m. for a battle against Saint Leo University.
