Mocs Minutes: Basketballs Host Tampa in Midweek Matchup

  • Florida Southern is on a three game win streak after beating Rollins in a come from behind fashion win over the weekend. The Mocs were down the entirety of the game until freshman Na'Haviya Paxton sank a 3-pointer to tie the game up 58-all with 6:13 remaining in the game. The Tars continued to pressure the Mocs as sophomore Arielle Dabu hit a 3-pointer of her own that changed the game in favor of FSC with 2:49 remaining. Southern went on to as much of a six-point lead only winning by three after a buzzer beating shot beyond the arc brought Rollins within three but Mocs defeated in the final minutes to capture a 73-70 win on the road. Graduate Student Ashley Shell led the way for FSC with 19 points and seven boards, followed by senior Domenica Zamora with 18 points and six assists, and freshman Sydney Gomes with 12 points to round out the double-digit scoring.
  • As a team, FSC is averaging 72.4 points per game, while their opponents average 67.1. Now with nine conference matchups and 16 games total the Mocs remain in the middle of the Sunshine State Conference at fifth. Out of the SSC teams Southern is the only team to have a better record on the road as they are 6-1 on the road and 3-4 in Jenkins Field House. In five consecutive games FSC remained the top team in the free throw percentage hitting 237 of 298 shots for a .795 average. On the defensive side, as a team the Mocs are second in the conference with 189 offensive boards for an average of 11.8 rebounds per game and second with steals coming in with 158 averaging 9.88 steals per game.
  • Shell continues to lead FSC in the conference remaining in fifth in scoring with 239 points averaging 14.9 points per game. The Deerfield Beach native is also leading the Mocs defensively coming in sixth with 117 total boards for an average of 7.4 rebounds per game. Zamora moved to third in the SSC with 3-point field goals per game with averaging 2.4 shots beyond the arc.. Along with Zamora's top performances from the field she is in the number two in the free throw percentage shooting .907, assists (4.6 apg) and steals (2.1 spg).
  • Tampa is currently on a five game win streak sitting as the team to beat in the SSC as the Spartans are currently ranked #7 in the WBCA and #9 in D2SIDA. Tampa most recent win comes against #8/9 Eckerd where they defeated the Tritons in the final seconds with a 56-54 win at home. The Spartans are currently holding a 16-1 overall record and 8-1 in the conference, their only loss being to Palm Beach Atlantic falling by 3-points 79-76 in overtime at home.
  • As a team, the Spartans are the top team of the SSC sitting first in field goal percentage with 459 made in 902 attempts for an average of .509. Tampa is sitting right behind FSC in team free throws with a second place of .778 percent from the line. Defensively is where Tampa is leading the way coming down with 517 defensive boards to average 30.4 rebounds a game.
  • Tampa is led by Sydney Kin sitting third in the SSC averaging 17.1 points per game scoring 301 points thus far this season. Melijah Sullivan rounds out the top 10 for Tampa sitting ninth averaging 13.9 points per game scoring 237 points for the year. Kin is the force behind the Spartans defensive sitting first with an average of 9.8 rebounds totalling 167 boards.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold a 67-39 record against Tampa that includes the last meeting between the two teams on March 6 when the two teams battled it out in the SSC Conference Tournament Championship game that saw the Mocs fall 74-67 in Tampa. Florida Southern currently leads the home record with 31 wins and are looking to continue their winning ways at home. The last matchup between the two teams in Jenkins Field House was in the Mocs favor, taking down the Spartans with a 66-41 decision on February 9th.

  • Florida Southern is coming off an 111-106 overtime win at Rollins, which snapped a three-game skid thanks to a career performance from redshirt sophomore Jadin Booth. Booth went for 39 points against the Tars, making nine three-pointers and going 100-percent from the free throw line, 12-for-12.
  • Redshirt senior E.J. Dambreville aided in the win with 29 points, going 11-for-28 from the field including seven three-pointers. Dambreville capped his double-double with his second straight 11 rebound game. Redshirt sophomore Dominick Denny chipped in 12 points off the bench while redshirt sophomore Luke Anderson added 10.
  • Booth leads the Mocs in points per game at 19.9 while Dambreville is close behind at 18.1 ppg. Anderson and redshirt sophomore Wes Bongiorni round out the double-digit averages with 12.6 and 10.1. Dambreville is the team leader and second in the league in rebounds per game, holding an average of 8.6. Booth ranks in the top four in scoring in the SSC while Dambreville is eighth.
  • As a squad, Florida Southern averages 89.5 points per game, second in the league behind Nova Southeastern, and is 10th in points allowed, at 83.3.
  • Tampa also snapped a three-game skid with an 80-73 win over Eckerd on Saturday, with all six scorers scoring 10 or more points. Jesse White led the way with 18 points while Tyson Leitao and De'Andre Harvey each had 14 and Jacob Harris and Mykah Brown with 12. Jonathan Bryant II was the other Spartan to score, and he tallied 10 points in the win.
  • Mykah Brown is the team leader in points per game at 15.4, which is 16th in the league. Bryant and Harvey both sit at 10.8 and 10.0 points per game, respectively while Harris is just outside of averaging double-digits, at 9.7. Leitao, the league's fourth best rebounder, leads Tampa with 8.5 per game.
  • Tampa averages 69.8 points per game, which is 11th in the league, while sitting fifth in points allowed, holding opponents to just 74.6 ppg.
  • HISTORY: The two teams enter the midweek matchup 5-4 in league play. Florida Southern holds the all-time series record at 99-66, being 56-24 at home in the series. The Moccasins are -91 in the last 10 meetings with the Spartans. The two teams met three times last season, FSC winning all three matchups, 1/19/22 (87-83), 2/9/22 (83-80), 3/1/22 (80-78).
