Mocs Minutes: FSC Basketball Returns to Action, Travels to Daytona Beach

  • Florida Southern are back on the road after almost a week off to take on another Sunshine State conference foe in Embry-Riddle. The Moccasins opened 2023 with a hard fought battle to RV Nova Southeastern down in Fort Lauderdale with a 78-67 loss to the Sharks on New Year's Day. Freshman Sydney Gomes led the Mocs with her first collegiate double-double coming down with 12 boards and 13 points in the paint. Sophomore tied Gomes with 13 points followed by graduate student Ashley Shell to finish with 10 points.
  • As a team, FSC is averaging 72.8 points per game, while their opponents average 67.3. Now with 6 conference matchups and 13 games total the Mocs remain the top team in the free throw percentage hitting 193 of 240 shots for a .804 average. On the defensive side, as a team the Mocs are fourth in the conference with 488 boards for an average of 37.5 rebounds per game and second with steals coming in with 143 averaging 11 steals per game.
  • Shell continues to lead FSC in the conference sitting seventh in scoring with 184 points averaging 14.2 points per game. Domenica Zamora is 13th with 143 points for an average of 13.0 points per game. Zamora sits second in the SSC with 3-point field goals per game with averaging 2.5 shots beyond the arc. Along with Zamora's top performances from the field she is in the top five with free throw percentage shooting .905, assists (5.0 apg) and steals (2.5spg). On the defensive side, Shell continues to be the leading force sitting fifth in the conference with 96 total boards. Sophomore Anna Denes is just outside the top 10 in the conference at 12th with 70 rebounds.
  • Embry-Riddle is on a one game losing streak after seeing its three-game win streak snap when the Eagles fell to Eckerd on the road with a 66-62 decision. Before the loss, Embry-Riddle earned its second conference win on Dec. 30 against Barry with a 74-65 win at home.
  • Embry-Riddle is shooting .498 from the field and .351 from beyond the arch and a .708 from the free throw line. In the SSC the Fighting Knights are fifth overall and are averaging 71.9 points in 12 games, the most in the conference, while averaging .436 in team field goal percentage making 280 shots in 642 attempts. The Eagles sit fifth in the conference with field goals but are ninth team rebounds with just 34.3 boards per game.
  • As a team, Embry Riddle is led by Madyson Jean-Louis with a 12.8 points per game average shooting .474 from the field and .379 from beyond the arc. Three other Eagles are averaging in double digits with Rachel Murray averaging 11 ppg and Keturah Balabyekkubo with 10.6 points per game. On the defensive front, Balabyekkubo is leading Embry-Riddle with 5.3 boards in 12 games coming away with 17 steals, 19 assists, and four blocks.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold a 10-4 record against the Eagles including a four-game win streak heading into this weekend's meeting. Florida Southern is 7-1 all-time against Lynn at Home in the Jenkins Field House. And is 3-3 on the road in Daytona. Florida Southern is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings against Embry-Riddle.

  • Florida Southern travels after six days off to take on Embry-Riddle. The Moccasins opened the New Year with a tough fought 92-77 battle at No. 2 Nova Southeastern and look to bounce back after the loss. Redshirt sophomore Luke Anderson led the Mocs with 18 points in 35 minutes of action while redshirt senior E.J. Dambreville and redshirt sophomore Jadin Booth tied for the team lead in rebounding with nine a piece.
  • Dambreville leads the team through 13 games averaging 18.5 points per game with 8.5 rebounds per game. Booth is second on the team in scoring at 17.8 ppg while Anderson is third, 12.8 ppg, and redshirt sophomore Wes Bongiorni is fourth at 10.8 ppg, to round out double-digit averages. Redshirt sophomore Tray Alexander averages a team-best 4.3 assists per game, which sits fourth in the league.
  • As a team, the Mocs average 89.4 ppg on 47.4-percent shooting from the field and a 41.1-percent mark from beyond the arc. FSC holds opponents to 80.8 points for an 8.6 positive scoring margin while the Mocs out-rebound opponents 39.5 to 37.7.
  • RV/#20 Embry-Riddle is on a five-game win streak which includes an 88-79 win over Barry (Dec. 30) and an 87-78 win at Eckerd (Jan. 4). In the win over the Tritons, the Eagles were led by a pair of players that scored 25 points. Chris Murray and Malcom Whitlow each went for 25 while Whitlow used four three-pointers to jump start his night while Murray missed just three shots from the floor. The duo was nearly perfect from the free throw line as Murray was 9-for-11 and Whitlow 9-for-9. Michael McCalister scored 14 points and led the team in rebounding with eight.
  • Whitlow is the team leader through 13 games, averaging 17.6 points while Murray is second at 16.5. McCalister rounds out double-digit averages with 11.0 ppg. McCalister carries an average of 9.3 rebounds per game into the Saturday matchup.
  • As a team, the Eagles average 83.1 ppg and hold opponents to 71.5, for a 11.6 margin, second best in the league. ERAU averages 44.2 rebounds per game and only allows opponents to 33.2.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern stands at 11-6 all-time against Embry-Riddle. The two teams split the 2022 series with each team winning on their respective home court: ERAU 113-89 in Daytona Beach (1/5/22), FSC 99-93 OT in Lakeland (2/23/22).
