Mocs Minutes: Men's and Women's Tennis Host Rollins; Basketballs Head to Saint Leo

  • No. 24 Florida Southern will host the Tars after a big 7-0 win over Bates College Monday afternoon at home. With the first win of the 2023 season, the Mocs only gave up one set in the entire match in a great performance at home. Mocs swept the doubles competition with wins by Maxima Ellenberg and Laura Vetter, Vivien Charvatova and Neli Sunjic, and Kennedi Brown and Kelly Kalren. Despite a set two loss on #3 with Laura Vetter, she persevered for the 10-7 tiebreak third set win. Isabella Bolivar was credited with the match win, securing the fourth point for the Mocs with her two-set win on #6.
  • No. 23 Rollins will take on the Mocs with one conference win already in the early start of the year. Rollins beat Palm Beach Atlantic University to open the 2023 season with a 4-3 win at home, before consecutive 7-0 losses to No. 1 Barry and No. 5 Flagler. Despite losing the doubles point in the match against PBA, Rollins rallied with wins on courts #1, 2, 3, and 4 for the 4-3 win.
  • HISTORY: Both teams have faced each other since the program's start in the early 70s. Rollins holds the advantage 13-46 overall, winning the last two matches against FSC. The last three matches have been decided by one point, so this will be a big top-25 matchup with a conference win on the line.

  • Florida Southern is coming off a 57-51 loss at home against Embry-Riddle. Freshman Amari Jackson scored 13 points off the bench.
  • Sophomore Arielle Dabu scored 10 points and classmate Anna Denes scored 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Redshirt senior Ashley Shell leads the Mocs in points per game and rebounds at 13.6 and 6.5 per game. Senior Domenica Zamora and Dabu are also averaging double digits at 11.7 and 10.4 points per contest respectively.
  • As a squad, Florida Southern ranks 6th in the conference in points per game at 68.0 points, and is 7th in points allowed at 66.0.
  • Saint Leo is coming off an 81-75 loss at Lynn. The Lions were led by Amanda Ulrich's 17 points. Tamara Shash and Chynna Mattair tallied 14 and 10 points respectively to round out Lions' scorers in double figures.
  • Saint Leo is lead in scoring by Amanda Ulrich, who averages 18.5 points per game. Alex Button averages 13.2 and Kiki McIntyre averages 10.3 points.

  • Florida Southern travels to St. Leo for the final regular season away game against the Lions of Saint Leo University. The Moccasins are carrying a five-game win streak into the midweek game after defeating Embry-Riddle 98-75 on Feb. 18.
  • In the home win over the Eagles, Jadin Booth paced the team with 35 points while E.J. Dambreville finished the game with a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Luke Anderson added 12 points for the Mocs.
  • As a team the Mocs are the second highest scoring team in the league, averaging 92.4 points per game while sitting 10th in scoring defense at 84.1 points per game allowed to opponents. Jadin Booth leads both the team and league in scoring at 21.7 points per game with a league-high 521 points scored this season. E.J. Dambreville is the team leader in rebounding and is second in the conference at 9.9 rpg with 248 this season, which is the most to date in the SSC.
  • Saint Leo hosts the Mocs and look to extend its win streak to three after defeating Rollins, 89-75, on Feb. 15 and Lynn, 81-66, both on the road. The Lions were led by SSC Player of the Week Kanon Koster, and Marty Jackson where the duo scored 47 of the team's 81 points. Jackson finished with 25 points while Koster 22. Grant Disken chipped in 13 points for SLU.
  • As a squad, the Lions are the third highest scoring team, 83.8 ppg, in the league as well as the third best scoring defense, holding opponents to 74.6 ppg. Marty Jackson is the team leader and ranks ninth in the league in scoring, 17.8 ppg, while he is also the team leader and ninth best rebounder at 6.0 per game.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern is 95-26 all-time against St. Leo where the Lions have won four of the last five meetings. In the last meeting, St. Leo defeated Florida Southern 71-64 on Jan. 11. Marty Jackson was the game's leading scorer with 20 points while Francis Sio had 15. For the Mocs, Alex Steen had a career-high 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Dominick Denny had 12, and Connor Raines 11. The Mocs' and conference's leading scorer, Jadin Booth did not play in the game.

  • RV Florida Southern will have a busy week as they face Bates this afternoon, and Rollins College on Thursday. Mocs will take on the DIII opponent at home after a big 6-1 road conference win over Eckerd on Saturday. FSC held the SSC Athlete of the Week for the first two weeks of the 2023 season with Chris Fok Kow and Matteo Feggi selected as winners. A court 2 loss against the Tritons was the only flight loss on Saturday, but still, a big SSC win on the road as Mocs are registering votes in the latest ITA poll.
  • Rollins travels to Lakeland to face the Mocs on Thursday with a two-game win streak. The Tars lost their season opener against No. 4 Flagler 5-2 but have since won 7-0 against PBA and 6-1 against DI Navy. Last time out, the Tars lost the doubles point but recovered to win every singles court in two sets. Rollins is led by Efe Comu at the #1 court with Mikkel Baumann another key returner.
  • HISTORY: Both teams have a storied history with Rollins having the upper hand in a 14-26 overall record, with an advantage to the Tars. Mocs have lost their last seven matches against Rollins but do perform better at home with a consistently large crowd early in the 2023 season. The last win over the Tars was in 2016 with a 5-4 decision at home.
