Mocs Minutes: Baseball and Women's Lacrosse Head to Florida Tech

  • Florida Southern will travel to Melbourne for a midweek, non-conference game against Florida Tech with regional implications. The Mocs have been on the road the last two weeks with a winning series against Nova Southeastern at the last conference bout this past weekend. FSC met NSU at Palm Beach State College due to conditions of the field in Fort Lauderdale to beat the Sharks 7-6 in game one, thanks to a ninth-inning grand slam by Connor Berry, his second homer of the game. NSU won game two in a walk-off double, but the Mocs got revenge with four homers in game three for a 17-7 win.
  • The Mocs continue to dominate at the plate with 68 homers this season, good for fifth in the nation among Division II programs. FCS has five of the top 10 players in the conference in the home run category with Berry with a team-high 11 tied with Drew Cavanaugh, Mitch Donofrio, and Bryce Safferwich with nine, and Jeff Liquori with eight. Mocs are batting .317 overall, with Safferwich a .399 batter. Five Moccasins are batting above .300.
  • On the mound, the Mocs have a 4.97 ERA as Nathan Madej continues to lead the team in strikeouts, with 74. The relievers continue to perform well with Andrew Williamson two innings pitched over the weekend, allowing no hits and no runs against the Sharks while striking out five. Kerry Wright also has a 1.93 ERA with no runs allowed in his last 11 appearances. Collin Camarigg tallied another save over the weekend, now at seven on the season. Camarigg needs one more save to move him into the top ten of program history for single-season and career saves.
  • Florida Tech will host the Mocs with another non-conference matchup against Eckerd College the following day. Last time out, the Panthers prevented a Barry University sweep with a game three win 8-5 over the Buccaneers but lost the series overall 2-1. The win in the final game of the series game with three runs scored in the 10th inning to hold on for a conference win. FIT was swept by No. 3 Tampa the week before with a series win against Eckerd three weeks ago.
  • The Panthers bat .279 as a team and are led by Josh Ford with a .368 average. Ford has an on-base percentage of .496, second in the conference and Gabe Garrett leads the SSC in at-bats with 168. Jason Blackstone is the other Panther batting over .300 as Gavin McGowan .377 in his limited appearances as starts. On the mound, FIT is 5.55 ERA group with Danny Vassallo leading with 41 strikeouts and Mitch Harding right behind with 40.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold a 109-36 overall record against the Panthers, having won the last three games in a row. Earlier this season, the Mocs hosted the Panthers in a midweek game that the Mocs won 17-7, including eight runs in the fifth inning. FSC had three homers in the game, one each by Liquori, Cavanaugh, and Donofrio. FIT had six pitchers used and the Mocs used five in a lengthy midweek game.

  • No. 5 Florida Southern travels to Florida Tech after posting a pair of wins last week; 17-10 at No. 21 Saint Leo and 26-14 over No. 13 Embry-Riddle. The 26 goals tied a program record for goals in a game while serving as a program mark for goals in an SSC game. Jackie Stoller paced the Mocs on week with 11 points on nine goals and two assists. She added four caused turnovers and one groundball on her way to earning SSC Offensive Player of the Week.
  • Stoller remains in front of the charge for Florida Southern, leading the team in points (78), goals (47), and assists (31). Hailey Daleo is close behind in goals with 44 and is tied with Madison Tare for second in total points (50). Lizzy Lynch is chasing the top three for total points, sitting at 49 going into Wednesday's road match.
  • In goal, Sydney O'Neill has been the starter for the past two games and is 2-1 after earning the wins over the Lions and Eagles. She has played 282 minutes with 34 saves for a .358 save-percentage. Rylie Rittberg owns a team-best 8-1 record with 489 minutes in goal with 49 saves for a .343 save-percentage. The Mocs average 18.50 goals per game while allowiing 12.13 goals per game.
  • Florida Tech host the Mocs after dropping its last two games 15-11 to No. 20 Saint Leo and 18-8 at No. 16 Lynn. The Panthers have three players with over 40 points on the year led by Jennifer Boyle at 43. Rachel Johnson is close behind with 42 while Sophia Scichilone is in third with 40 total.
  • Johnson is the team leader in goals with 33 this season ahead of Boyle and Kayla Minton at 30. In goal, Emily Harris has played the most minutes (576) with 59 total saves and owns a 7-4 record while Kellen Lucchesi is 2-1 with 165 minutes played ahead of Cailey Canessa at 0-1 with 147 minutes.
  • As a team, the Panthers average 14.80 goals and allow just 10.33 goals but have given up 14.4 goals a game in the five SSC games.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern is 13-0 all-time against Florida Tech including a 20-6 decision a year ago on April 20 in Lakeland, Fla. In the 2022 meeting, Madison Tare paced the Mocs with six points on five goals and one assist while Hailey Daleo tallied five points with three goals and two assists ahead of Lizzy Lynch with a pair of goals and assists for four points. Ellie Griffin and Abby McFerren each had a hattrick in the win over the Panthers. Jennifer Boyle led Florida Tech in the loss from a year ago, scoring half the Panthers goals with three, while adding an assist for four points.
