Montevallo Stuns #7 Florida Southern in Overtime

LAKELAND, Fla. - The seventh-ranked Florida Southern College men's lacrosse team was stunned Saturday afternoon in its home opener as unranked University of Montevallo took down the hosts, 19-18, in overtime. The decisive goal came just 46 seconds into the extra time as Jackson Klewchuk of Montevallo scored his fourth tally of the game to end the contest. The Moccasins never were able to possess the ball in the extra period as Montevallo started with possession due to an earlier FSC penalty.

The loss is the first of the season for the Moccasins who fall to 1-1 on the year while the Montevallo Falcons improved to 1-1 after dropping their home opener a week ago.

The Falcons jumped out to an 8-1 lead after 10 minutes of action at Berend Field Saturday afternoon. The Mocs would have to play catch-up the rest of the contest as Montevallo answered nearly every Moccasin attack. After 30 minutes of action, Montevallo led 12-6.

The third did not change much of the momentum as both teams tallied three goals each. The Falcons entered the fourth leading 15-9. The Mocs once again struggled to find the offensive spark in the fourth as Montevallo increased its lead to 17-10 with 7:30 left in the contest. As time ticked away, the Moccasins began their unbelievable comeback.

Freshman Maddux Walton opened the run as he scored with 6:17 left in the game to cut the lead to just six. Less than a minute later Brendan Glasser found the back of the net for the for the first time Saturday. Just over a minute later, freshman Grant Ansted tallied his second goal of the contest cutting the deficit to 17-13. Just 20 seconds later, senior Kaleb Cook collected his third goal of the contest and cut the lead to just three with 4:11 left.

The Falcons were finally able to stop the bleeding as Luke Hennebaul scored his first goal of the season with 2:26 left to push the advantage back to four. Graduate student Jonas Aquilla returned the Mocs to the scoring column as he notched a goal with just two minutes remaining to keep the Mocs' hopes alive. Following a Montevallo penalty, sophomore Nolan Tighe converted to cut the deficit to just two with 1:16 left. A quick face off win followed by a Glasser goal cut the lead to just one with just over a minute to play.

Montevallo won the ensuing face off and looked to be running out the clock but a FSC penalty brought play to a halt and allowed the Moccasins to setup one final defensive effort. Nick Shannon once again proved to be the difference maker as he caused a turnover before scooping up the ground ball with less than 20 seconds left in the contest. Cook raced down the field and scored his second goal of the rally, tying the game at 18-18 with six seconds remaining in the contest.

Montevallo received possession due to an early FSC penalty and chose to run out the clock setting up for overtime. The Falcons once again began overtime with the ball due to the penalty and took advantage of their opening possession scoring just 46 seconds into overtime.

Cook led the Mocs with six total points off of four goals and a pair of assists. Tighe and junior Matt Flammenspeck each finished with five points in the loss. Tighe tallied two goals and dished out three assists while Flammenspeck scored three goals and handed out two assists. Four others scored two goals each including Glasser, junior Brydon Robichaud, Ansted and Maddux.

Senior Michael Simone played all but 37 seconds in the cage for the Mocs and tallied 14 saves in the loss. Alex Egorshin took home the victory for the Falcons as he made 19 saves.

Sophomore Jacob Czyz went 17-of-32 (.531) at the 'X' while classmate Luke Henricksen picked up 3-of-5 (.600). Czyz led the way in ground balls for the Mocs with seven while Shannon chipped in six to go along with three caused turnovers. Sophomore Joe Buxbaum led the defensive effort with four caused turnovers while collecting three ground balls.

Matthew Boas led the Falcons with seven goals and an assist while Klewchuk, who scored the game-winning goal, finished with four goals and three assists.

The Mocs will next be in action on the road as FSC travels to Gaffney, S.C. to battle third-ranked Limestone on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m.
