Beach Volleyball Concludes Action on Day One of the AVCA Small College Beach Championships

TAVARES, Fla. - The Florida Southern College beach volleyball team opened the AVCA Small College Beach Championships with two matches Friday at Hickory Point Beach in Tavares, Fla.

The Moccasins (20-10), 10th in seeding among Pool B of the championship field, took on No. 2 Concordia University-Irvine and No. 7 Tusculum University to open day one of Championship weekend. Mocs fell 3-0 to Golden Eagles (20-11) with two unfinished courts and a 3-0 loss to the Pioneers (20-9).

FLORIDA SOUTHERN 0, CONCORDIA-IRVINE 3
The morning opened a little differently than what the Mocs are used to as not all teams got the opportunity to hit the sand. FSC had three pairs compete to start the Championship as pair 4 of Christina Ramazio and Sydney Melcher rallied against Jordyn Nichols and Korah Nordin with a 21-11, 21-17 final. Next the fifth pair of Hailey Carefoot and Jackie Schner dropped a tough first set 21-19, before the set 2 with a 21-10 final. The other team to compete was the top team of Ashli McKenny and Emma Winford falling in two sets 21-18, 21-8.

In the pairs challenge, Chloe Maxwell and Madeline Sanders joined forces and the duo won game one against Catawba in straight sets, 21-14, 21-12.

FLORIDA SOUTHERN 0, TUSCULUM 3
Another tough opponent for the Mocs as the match was just 3 pairs that all fell in straight sets. The no.2 pair of Sarah Crocker and Reagan Carlton took to the sand for the first time falling to the Browne sisters 21-15, 21-10. Another team that hit the sand for the first time in the championship was the third court of Hayley St. Martin and Mary Olivia Muti as the pair dropped set one 21-8, before rallying back in set two for a 21-12 final. Getting another opportunity on the day was Melcher and Ramazio but the pair fell to the Pioneers 21-11, 21-15.

Maxwell and Sanders continued action in the pairs challenge as the two dropped the first game of the challenge falling to St. Leo's Clare Flanagan and Erin Johnson 21-9, 21-17.

The Mocs will continue to compete in pool play with a match against 15-seed Catawba tomorrow, April 13, at 9:05 a.m. before entering the challenge round based on the final results. Each of the matches will be at Hickory Point Beach in Tavares, Fla.
