LAKELAND, Fla. - The Florida Southern College beach volleyball team swept its tri-match on Saturday as the Mocs defeated both teams with 5-0 wins against Ave Maria and St. Johns River at the Joe P. Ruthven Beach Volleyball Courts.
The Moccasins (5-1) defeated Ave Maria in the 11 a.m. match before taking on St. John's River in the 3 p.m. match, as only two matches were sent to three sets.
In a new #2 pair,
Sydney Melcher and
Nicole Eden won in straight sets to earn the first win of the day as the duo defeated AMU 21-17, 21-19. The #4 pairs of
Hayley St. Martin and
Mary Olivia Muti split the first two sets, 21-15 and 15-21, forcing a third set where the pair earned the second win 15-7.
Looking for the win, it was the Mocs #1 flight of
Emma Winford and
Ashli McKenny that captured the win, defeating their opponent 21-9, 21-14. The final two pairs to finish was the #5 pair as
Isabella Muti and
Zoe Lowe finished in two sets, 21-14, 21-16, followed by the threes of
Hailey Carefoot and
Reagan Carlton forcing three sets but coming out on top, 21-14, 18-21, 15-6
In the final match of the day, Florida Southern took on St. Johns River Community College, where the Mocs won all matches with a 2-0 sweep. First, the #2 flight of Melcher and Eden dominated the Vikings #2 pair, winning 21-9 and 21-13. Next, the four duo of Muti and Lowe won 21-10 and 21-18 to make it 2-0.
Looking for the final win, it was court Winford and McKenny to seal the win as they defeated St. Johns 21-8, 21-15. The final two wins came from St. Martin and Muti winning the #5 pair 21-11 and 21-12 before Carefoot and Carlton won the finale 21-16 and 21-14.
Florida Southern returns to action at home, hosting Palm Beach Atlantic in a tri-match on the Judy and Joe P. Ruthven Courts. The first serve is scheduled for 10 a.m.
