FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Southern College beach volleyball team dropped the tri-match on Wednesday falling to Palm Beach Atlantic 5-0 before taking on DI Florida Gulf Coast University falling 5-0.
The Moccasins (15-7, 4-5 SSC) lost the first match of the day by a 5-0 score, in a Sunshine State Conference rematch. The Mocs battled to four three-set matches in the first match against the Sailfish (11-4) but one
Flights one, four, and five all on the first sets against PBA as the No.5 duo of
Hayley St. Martin and
Mary Olivia Muti won set one 21-19, but fell in the next two 21-18, 15-12. The next pair to rally with the Sailfish was the No.4 flight of
Hailey Carefoot and
Reagan Carlton also winning set one, 21-19 but fell in the next two 21-18, 15-12 to make it 2-0.
The No.2 pair of
Sydney Melcher and
Nicole Eden dropped the next match in straight sets to give Palm Beach Atlantic the early win, falling 21-14, 21-19. The next two to finish were the pairs at No. 3 court and No. 1 with
Isabella Muti and
Zoe Lowe falling in set one 21-17 before rallying to a 22-20 set win and forcing the third set 15-10 in favor of the Sailfish.
The last flight to finish was the top flight as
Emma Winford and
Ashli McKenny took set one 21-17 but rallied in the next two falling 21-18, 15-13 in the rematch.
In the second match for FSC, they faced the DI FGCU Eagles as Mocs dropped the first match due to injury giving Florida Gulf Coast an early 1-0 lead. Muti and St.Martin fell in the next match making it 2-0 in favor of the Eagles falling 21-13 in both sets.
The top flight of Winford and McKenny fell 21-13, 21-6 as FGCU sealed the win. Muti and Lowe continued to fight at the third court falling 21-9, 21-14 before Melcher and Eden fell 21-10, 21-17 fighting in set two.
Florida Southern returns to action Saturday, March 29 as they travel to Palatka, Fla. to compete in a tri-match. The Moccasins are scheduled to face St. Johns River and Wake Technical. The first serve is set for 10:00 a.m.
