ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- The Florida Southern beach volleyball team split a Sunshine State Conference tri-match on Wednesday afternoon at the Baker Beach Volleyball Complex. The Moccasins fell in game one against Saint Leo 3-2 before winning game two 4-1 over Eckerd.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 2, SAINT LEO 3
In the first match for FSC, they faced the Lions for the second time this season as three flights forced a third set, with the top flight of
Emma Winford and
Ashli McKenny being the only pair to win in two sets 21-19, 21-17. Flight three was the other winning set as
Sydney Melcher and
Aubrey Wieser won in three, 21-15, 17-21, 15-11.
The second flight of
Hailey Carefoot and
Reagan Carlton fell in straight sets 21-16, 21-10, before the Mocs flight four and five fell in three sets.
Isabella Muti and
Zoe Lowe dropped the first set pushing it to a 23-21 final but won set two 17-21 before falling 15-11. The fifth flight,
Hayley St. Martin and
Mary Olivia Muti forced three set sets as well, dropping the first one 21-13, winning the second 23-21, before the final 15-8.
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 4, ECKERD 1
In the first match of the season against the Tritons, the Mocs swept the flights one through three in two sets as the duos of Winford and McKenny won 21-19, 23-21, followed by Carefoot and Carlton with a final of 21-18, 21-13, and Muti and Lowe with two sets at 21-17.
On court four, Melcher and Wieser fell in two sets, 21-11 and 21-17 while St. Martin and Muti won in three sets 20-22, 27-25, 15-11.
Florida Southern heads north for their spring break trip playing in the Briggs Beach Bash hosted by Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga. on March 7-8. The first serve is scheduled for 11 a.m. against DI UT-Chattanooga.
