SAINT LEO, Fla. - The Florida Southern College beach volleyball team saw its run at the inaugural Sunshine State Conference tournament come to an end Saturday morning as the Moccasins (20-10) fought hard falling 3-1 to Palm Beach Atlantic University.
The Sailfish jumped out to a 2-0 lead winning flights #5 and #2 as
Hayley St. Martin and
Mary Olivia Muti fell 21-11, 21-15 at court five and
Sydney Melcher and
Nicole Eden rallied back in set two falling in set one 21-16 but fought to a 22-20 final in set two.
Reagan Carlton and
Zoe Lowe cut PBA's lead in half winning the #3 flight as the All-SSC second team members won 21-19, 21-16 to make it 2-1. With eyes on both court's one and four, both teams split the first two sets sending the courts to a third and final set.
At #4 flight,
Hailey Carefoot and
Isabella Muti won the first set 21-14 but fell in set two 14-21 where they forced the third set falling in the final points 15-13 as PBA won 3-1 to send them on to face Saint Leo in a redemption match.
The top flight of
Emma Winford and
Ashli McKenny did not finish but dropped set one 15-21 and came back to win set two 21-18, forcing the third set, which did not finish.
Florida Southern returns to action on Thursday, April 17, as they compete in the Small College Championship. This year, the Championship is held in Gulf Shores, Ala, from April 17 to 19. The times and opponents will be announced later.
