HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Florida Southern women's lacrosse (3-0) triumphed over the University of Alabama in Huntsville (2-3) with a 12-8 win on Thursday evening. The Moccasins dominated with nine unassisted goals, underscoring their offensive strength.
The game kicked off with Florida Southern seizing the momentum early as
Jenna Vetter netted the first goal at 12:38. UAH answered with Maya Bronson's free position goal at 10:44, leveling the score. Florida Southern quickly regrouped, launching a scoring spree with
Kolby Cohen's goal at 9:43, followed by
Hanna Watson's assist to Vetter at 7:50.
Louise Aloi and
Lindsey Tolliver each added a goal, with Tolliver capitalizing on a free position shot at 3:17, wrapping up the first quarter with a commanding 5-1 lead for the Moccasins.
The Moccasins kept the pressure on in the second quarter.
Danielle Mojsej, assisted by Cohen, scored at 9:39. Tolliver further widened the gap with two more goals, one from a free position at 5:41. Despite UAH's Olivia Rewers scoring at 3:09, Florida Southern stayed in control. A late free position goal by Bronson brought UAH within five, but the Moccasins ended the half ahead 8-3.
Opening the third quarter, Vetter capitalized on a player-up situation, scoring at 14:05. UAH quickly responded with Reagan Flanagan's goal at 13:55. Florida Southern regained their stride with
Baillie Pinder scoring, assisted by Watson, during another man-up play at 5:37. UAH fought back with goals from Kate Simoncic and Ella Rutherford, but Tolliver's goal at 2:02 kept Florida Southern comfortably in front, closing the quarter at 11-6.
In the final quarter, UAH took advantage of a player-up opportunity with Ava Fudjinski scoring at 11:41. Florida Southern swiftly answered through Vetter at 10:52. UAH's Sarah Cole, assisted by Rutherford, scored at 1:59, but despite several attempts, including a wide free position shot by Rewers, the Chargers couldn't catch up. The Moccasins clinched the win at 12-8.
Vetter led the Mocs in points with three goals and an assist, converting all her shots into scoring opportunities. Tolliver was instrumental with four goals, including two from free positions, showcasing her accuracy. Cohen's impact was significant, contributing a goal and an assist with five draw controls and two groundballs.
Charlie Laye shined for the Mocs on defense with six groundballs and three caused turnovers.
Florida Southern's record now stands at 3-0, while Alabama Huntsville is 2-3. Up next, Florida Southern will face the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, Feb. 21, set for noon at John Hunt Park in Huntsville, Alabama.
