Jiajun “Austin” Yu joined the Florida Southern College esports staff in February of 2021, taking on the position of Head Coach for the League of Legends team. Known by his gamertag, Gate, he will coach remotely.

Gate’s beginnings stem from his own collegiate time at the University of British Columbia, where he gained both player and coaching experience. He spent six years playing in the professional scene before retiring in November of 2020.

“I originally came from collegiate before I even started to play amateur,” said Gate. “I understand the balance between school life and League for the players. I want to create an environment here drawn from my experience at the pro levels so that the players feel like they have the opportunity to see high level competitive play.”

Gate is one of the top League of Legends players in the world, and has played for teams including Vortex, Team Impulse, Phoenix1, Echo Fox, OpTic, IMT, and his last team before retiring from the professional scene, Immortals.

“We’re all very excited to watch the League of Legends team continue to dominate in the collegiate scene,” said Drew Howard, the Director of Athletics & Dean of Wellness. “Gate is an amazing addition to the Florida Southern College team, and we can’t wait to see him build up our team.”
