Biography

One of Florida Southern’s six returning All-Americans after competing in all three freestyle distance events at both the 2013 and 2014 NCAA Division II National Finals (500, 1000, and 1650)… Had one All-American certificate as a freshman and one as a sophomore… School record holder in the 400 individual medley… Part of Florida Southern’s school record 800-freestyle relay team, with that record set during the 2014 Division II National Finals. 

As a junior (2014-15)… Second Team All-Sunshine State Conference… Division II Academic Achievement Award winner… SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll… Took part in all eight regular season meets plus the SSC Championships… Swam primarily the middle distance and long-distance events and was in the 500-freestyle and 1,000-freestyle in all nine meets where she competed… Had NCAA “B” qualifying times in three freestyle events (500, 1000, and 1650) and in the 400-IM… Set the school record in the 400-IM with a 4:30.16 at the SSC Championships when the she won the consolation final (Feb. 20)… Had Florida Southern’s top time in the 400-IM, and was #2 on the times list behind only All-American Alli Crenshaw in the 500-freestyle, 1,000-freestyle, and 1,650-freestyle.

As a sophomore (2013-14)… All-American in the 800-freestyle relay (5th place)… Second Team All-Sunshine State Conference… NCAA Division II Academic Achievement Award winner… CSCAA Scholar All-American First Team… SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll… Florida Southern Athletic Director’s Scholar-Athlete Award winner for women’s swimming… SSC Swimmer-of-the-Week for October 28 after winning a total of four individual races in two different meets against Saint Leo and Florida Tech… Swam the anchor leg in the 800-freestyle relay at the Division II National Finals, helping the Moccasins set a school record in that event with a time of 7:26.23… In addition to the 800-freestyle relay, also competed in the 500, 1000, and 1650-freestyle events at the National Finals… One of five Moccasins to participate in all 11 meets, including the Division II National Finals… Had four individual wins, taking the 200- and 1,000-freestyle against Saint Leo at Saint Leo (Oct. 25), and the 500 and the 1,650 the next day at home against Florida Tech (Oct. 26)… Nearly won two other 1,000-freestyle races, finishing second on back-to-back days against Emory (Jan.10) and teammate Alli Crenshaw Nova Southeastern (Jan. 11)… Part of two winning relay teams, with one of those coming against Florida Tech as well… Second on the school’s top times list in the 500-freestyle and the 1650-freestyle behind only Crenshaw, and was also second on the times list in the 400-IM, only .07 seconds behind Elizabeth Fris.

As a freshman (2012-13)… All-American in the 800-freestyle relay (7th place)… CSCAA Scholar All-American First Team… SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll… SSC Swimmer-of-the-Week for January 7 following her performance in a dual meet victory over Bridgeport… SSC Champion in the 1,000-freestyle, the first Moccasin to win that event… Broke the previous SSC Championship record in the 1,000 by more than 14 seconds… Also helped the 800-freestyle relay team finish second at the SSC Championships with a school record time of 7:26.54… Earned seven event wins during the season, including four in the 1,000-freestyle… Also won the 500-freestyle twice, and the 400-IM once… Picked up her first career victory in the 1,000 in a dual meet against Division I Florida International (Nov. 10), edging Mary Boucher by 0.18 seconds… Finished second to teammate and eventual national champion Alli Crenshaw in the 1,000-freestyle in the season-opening meet at Tampa (Oct. 19), and was also second to Crenshaw at Rollins (Nov. 17)… Placed third in the 1,650-freestyle in a dual meet against Indian River State College (Jan. 12), finishing behind NJCAA national runner-up Hallie Petersohn and Crenshaw, who went on to win the NCAA Division II title… Helped the 800-freestyle relay team to a runner-up finish at the Nova Southeastern Invitational (Dec. 14)… Won both the 1,000-freestyle and 500-freestyle, and was second in the 200-butterfly against Bridgeport (Jan. 5) to claim the SSC Swimmer-of-the-Week award… Also won the 1,000 and 500 in a dual meet against Daytona State (Jan. 26)… Individually, was second on the team’s top times list in all three freestyle distance events, as well as the 200-butterfly… Had Florida Southern’s best season time in the 400 IM with a 4:38.59 at the Nova Southeastern Invitational.

In high school… 2012 graduate of Columbia High School… 4-year letter winner in swimming and 2-time state qualifier… As a senior, finished seventh in the state in the 200-freestyle relay… Was a member of the school’s record-breaking 400-freestyle relay team… Was team MVP as a junior, and qualified for state in both the 200- and 500-freestyles… Earned team MVP honors and broke school record in 500-freestyle and 100-breaststroke as a sophomore… Placed in top-16 at regionals… As a freshman, placed in top-16 at regionals and broke school record in 100-backstroke... Earned Columbia High School’s Rookie-of-the-Year award… 3-time academic award winner for swimming… 4-time Academic Honor Roll member and Academic letterman… Served as National Honor Society President… Member of Gator Swim Club for four years… Personal… Daughter of Robb and Paula Burns… Has one younger sister (Hannah)… Born June 5, 1994… Major: Nursing.
