Florida Southern College head baseball coach Rick O’Dette has announced the hiring of Kevin Mahoney as an assistant coach for the Moccasins November 2026.
Mahoney brings nearly 20 years of playing and coaching experience at the collegiate and professional levels. Most recently, Mahoney was named an assistant coach for the New York Mets Major League staff before the 2025 MLB season, spending the last two years as an assistant hitting coach and batting cage pitcher. His professional experience with the Mets organization was preceded by serving as the manager of the Johnson City Doughboys from 2022-24. Named the 2023 Appalachian League Manager of the Year, Mahoney led the Doughboys to 87 wins from 2022-24, including the 2023 Appalachian League title. Mahoney managed two All-Star Games (2022, ‘24) and the Appalachian League West Select Team vs. the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team in 2024. Mahoney’s 87 wins are the most by an Appy League manager.
The road to the Johnson City Doughboys manager came from his time with the New York Yankees as a Player Development Instructor from 2014 to 2020. Over that time, Mahoney was a hitting coach, infield coach, outfield coach, and the base running/bunting coach in multiple areas from the DR Academy to AAA.
A Miller Place, N.Y., native, Mahoney was a standout player for Canisius College, earning an All-MAAC selection twice and being named 2009 MAAC Player of the Year. Similarly, he was the 2008 Coastal Plain League Offensive Player of the Year, representing the Forest City Owls. Mahoney was drafted in the 23rd round of the 2009 draft by the New York Yankees. He played for six seasons in the minor leagues, climbing up the ranks in the Yankees farm system. He was a 2012 Eastern League All-Star and 2013 Eastern League Champion, playing for the Trenton Thunder.
