Freshmen Lead Mocs to Easy Season-Opening Win Over Ave Maria

SAINT LEO - Freshmen Megan Dzikas and Kirstin McIntyre combined for 44 points off the bench to lead the Lady Mocs to an easy 97-55 win over Ave Maria in their season opener at the Saint Leo Sleep Inn Classic Saturday.

Dzikas, who was Manatee High School's career scoring leader with 1,539 points, led the Moccasins with 24 points, hitting 10 of 17 from the field, including four three-pointers. McIntyre, who came to FSC from John Jay High School in Hopewell Junction, N.Y., recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Another Moccasin freshman, Michaela Hawley, from last year's 5A state champion Barron Collier High School, also had a double-figure scoring debut with 10 points.

The Moccasins scored the first 10 points of the game against Ave Maria, an NAIA program in its first season of competition. Nine different players scored for FSC in the first half, as the Moccasins built a 45-27 halftime advantage. They were never challenged in the second half, as coach Jarrod Olson used all 12 players on his roster.

Ave Maria (1-4) committed 35 turnovers in the game, while FSC had just 12.

The Moccasins play Ala.-Huntsville Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Saint Leo Sleep Inn Classic.
