LAKELAND - Chelsea Johnson led a second-half surge that took the Moccasins from a three-point halftime margin to a 20-point victory, 69-49, over Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras here Wednesday night at Jenkins Field House.
Off to their best start since the 1992-93 season, the Moccasins are 5-0. The 1992-93 Moccasin squad won its first 16 games en route to a 25-3 season.
Johnson scored 12 of her game-high 20 points in the second half. After the Gamecocks scored first in the second half to tie the game at 32-32, the Moccasins went on a 21-5 run in the next six minutes, with nine of the 21 points coming from Johnson, to break the game open.
UPR-Rio Piedras committed 17 turnovers in the second half, 26 in the game, that resulted in 26 Moccasin points.
For the game, FSC outrebounded the Gamecocks 53-34. Nicolle DiRaimo and Megan Dzikas led the Moccasins with eight apiece.
In addition to Johnson's 20 points, the Moccasins had three other players score in double figures Michaela Hawley tallied 12, Tanja Speaker picked up 11 and DiRaimo added 10.
Sonia Roman led the Gamecocks with 20 and Marlene Rivera added 17.
The Moccasins return to action Dec. 2 with a 7 p.m. game at Palm Beach Atlantic.
