Tars Spoil Mocs' SSC Opener as Defending Champs

Box Score

WINTER PARK - The Moccasins' first game as defending Sunshine State Conference champions did not go the way they hoped Saturday, as Rollins won the SSC opener here for both teams 85-72. It was the Moccasins' third straight loss and dropped their record to 6-4. Rollins snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 4-2.

The Moccasins, who won last year's SSC regular season title with a 12-4 record, jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the first two minutes, but after that the Tars took control. They answered the Moccasins' start with six straight points of their own, then took the lead on Nick Wolfe's layup with 15:12 remaining in the half and led the rest of the game.

Rollins was up 40-29 at halftime and the Moccasins never got closer than nine points in the second period.

The Tars' zone defense limited the Moccasins to just 35.5 percent shooting from the field, while the Tars shot 53.6 percent. FSC's three-point shooters had a tough night, as they made just six of 34 from three-point range. Rion Rayfield, Rob Eldridge and Braxton Williams hit just one three-pointer each and were a combined three of 23 for the game.

Zach Smith led the Moccasins with 15 points, while John Thompson added 13 off the bench. Williams and Brandon Jenkins each scored 10.

Jeremy Sharpe, with 19 points, led a balanced Rollins attack that had five players score in double figures.

The Moccasins are idle until Saturday when they play a 4 p.m. game at Palm Beach Atlantic.
