FLORIDA SOUTHERN BLANKED BY ROLLINS IN SSC OPENER

Box Score

Tom Makin scored two goals and Bradley Welch had one to lead Rollins to a 3-0 win over Florida Southern Friday night. It was the first Sunshine State Conference game for both teams.

The Moccasins (1-5) were shutout for the first time this season despite out-shooting the Tars, 13-9. It marked the fifth time this year the Mocs had more shots than their opponents, but they've dropped four of those games. Defensively, the Mocs are also allowing less than 10 shots per match.

Friday night's match saw just five total shots in the first half, but Makin scored on one of them by hitting a free kick from the top of the box in the 12th minute, the first shot of the night for Rollins.

The score remained 1-0 until the Tars (4-3) scored in the 55th minute on a goal by Bradley Welch. That came on their first shot of the second half.

The Moccasins went on to out-shoot the Tars 11-6 in the second half but could not dent the scoreboard. Rollins eventually added a third goal in the 84th minute when Makin scored on a rebounded penalty kick. Makin had originally taken the kick, and goalkeeper Paul DiPalma stopped it, only to have the ball end up back at Makin's feet.

Florida Southern will be off until Saturday, September 27 when the Mocs travel to Miami Shores to face Barry University at 7:00 p.m.
