Moccasins and Sailfish Play to 1-1 Draw

WEST PALM BEACH â€" Palm Beach Atlantic scored once early in the first half, and Florida Southern scored once early in the second, as the two teams fought to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon.

The Sailfish (6-5-2) scored on the game’s first shot when Cheyne Roberts fed Kyle Crouse for a break-away goal in the 16th minute. The Moccasins (1-9-1) later answered in the 58th minute with an own goal headed in by a PBA defender off a corner kick.

Before the game-tying goal, the Mocs were held to just one shot in the first half, an attempt by James May that was blocked in the 37th minute. Brad Hunt gave the Mocs a chance to score right after halftime too, but his shot was saved by Joe Yurchak. Hunt’s corner kick then led to the Moccasin goal and resulted in the Mocs’ first overtime game in two years.

Palm Beach Atlantic, which entered the game ranked #8 in the South Region, out-shot Florida Southern, 18-9, but most of those never made it to the net or even to goalkeeper Johan Jonsson. The back line of Matt Macias, J.D. Ruiz, Billy Locy and Sebastian Bergh surrendered just five shots that were on target, and matched that total with five blocks of their own.

Each team had two shots in overtime, with Yurchak saving one by Jared Bellingar. The PBA goalkeeper finished with five saves, all of them either in the second half or overtime, and Jonsson had four saves for the Moccasins.

Florida Southern will be on the road for its next game as well, facing Flagler College on Wednesday night at 7:00.
