LAKELAND - Megan Dzikas provided a basket, a block, a rebound and a free throw in the final 30 seconds to help preserve an 89-85 Moccasin win over Puerto Rico-Bayamon Tuesday night at Jenkins Field House.
With the game tied at 85-85, Dzikas hit a jumper with 27 seconds left to put FSC up by two, then with eight seconds left she blocked a shot by Bayamon's Angelie Morales and grabbed the rebound. Chelsea Johnson was fouled and hit one of two free throws to give the Moccasins a three-point lead, then Dzikas was fouled with two seconds left and made one of two free throws to clinch the Moccasins' fourth straight win.
Johnson, coming off a career-best 38-point game Saturday night, poured in 33 points Tuesday night, hitting 13 of 18 from the field. It was her 32nd consecutive game scoring in double figures. She hit three three-pointers, giving her a streak of 20 straight games with at least one three-pointer made.
Along with Johnson, Michaela Hawley tallied 24 points, 15 in the second half and Dzikas finished with 14 points and six assists.
Katiria Rodriguez led Bayamon with 27 points and Morales added 25.
The Moccasins, who had beaten Bayamon 81-59 last Friday night at Saint Leo, looked like they might be headed for a similar margin Tuesday, as they built a 16-point lead in the first 10 minutes of the game. Bayamon outscored FSC 20-7 in the final 8:36 of the first half, however, and trimmed the lead to three at halftime 36-33.
FSC built the lead back up to 15, 65-50, with 12:16 remaining, but Bayamon, which shot 67.7 percent from the field in the second half, went on a 16-2 run to cut the lead to 67-66 with 8:47 left. The Moccasins maintained the lead until Bayamon tied it with 1:53 to go and then took the lead, 85-83, on a basket by Morales at the 1:30 mark. A pair of free throws by Danielle Walsh tied the game at 85-85 with 1:20 left before Dzikas took control to finish out the game.
The Moccasins (4-1) play Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Wednesday night at 5:30 at Jenkins Field House.
