Mocs Make Sailfish Eighth Straight Victim

WEST PALM BEACH - The third-ranked Moccasins showed they don't always have to have the big offensive numbers to win games. Averaging 93.9 points in their first seven games, FSC had its lowest point total of the season Saturday, but it still was enough to produce an eighth straight win here 66-56 over Palm Beach Atlantic.

The Sailfish, who suffered their eighth straight loss, reeled off 11 unanswered points to start the game before John Thompson put the Moccasins on the board four minutes into the game. The Moccasins had three different one-point leads, but trailed by one at halftime, 29-28.

Thompson's layup at the 18:35 mark in the second half put the Moccasins in front for good, 32-31, and Rion Rayfield's three-pointer with 8:11 to play gave FSC its first double digit advantage. With the Moccasins leading 60-46 at the 3:55 mark, the Sailfish went on an 8-0 run to trim the lead to 60-54 with 2:16 to go. However, the Moccasins answered with back-to-back baskets from Brandon Jenkins and Thompson to end any upset hopes by the Sailfish.

Thompson led the Moccasins with 20 points and eight rebounds. Rayfield added 17 points, including three three-pointers, and was 4-4 from the free throw line to extend his current streak to 14 straight without a miss. Brandon Jenkins tossed in 10 points.

The Moccasins had a 13-5 advantage at the free throw line and out-rebounded the Sailfish 42-36. FSC shot 41.4 percent from the field, its lowest percentage of the season, but held PBA to just 35.4 percent.

Saturday the Moccasins will try to match the 9-0 season start of the 2005-06 squad when they take on Freed Hardeman of Tennessee at 7:30 p.m. at Jenkins Field House. Freed Hardeman was ranked 16th in this week's NAIA national poll.
