Down 2-0, Mocs Rally To Win Opener In 5

The 16th-ranked Moccasins opened their volleyball season in dramatic fashion Friday, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to beat Central Oklahoma in five sets, 24-26, 23-25, 25-20, 25-13, 17-15, at the St. Mary's Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.

Kelly Sherman led the Moccasins with a career-high 12 kills and a pair of performances off the bench also helped deliver the victory. Sophomore Elena Sorich delivered a career-high 10 kills and hit a team-best .364 to go with nine digs, while freshman Anne Pietkiewicz made her FSC debut with nine kills, 10 digs and six aces.

Lauren Huber, a transfer from Winthrop, was in the Moccasins' starting lineup and had 10 kills and hit .333 in her FSC debut, while Kendall Wilde made her first start at setter in place of the injured Elise Burke and delivered a career-high 55 assists to go with 11 digs and Courtney Johnson led the FSC defensive effort with 22 digs.

After dropping the first two sets, the Moccasins jumped out to big leads in both the third and fourth sets to even the match at 2-2. In the decisive fifth set, FSC rallied from a 13-8 deficit with six unanswered points on two kills by Natalie Arvizu, one by Julia Borecka and three Central Oklahoma errors. Pietkiewicz broke a 15-15 tie with a kill, then Sherman and Anna Niebuhr blocked a Central Oklahoma attack for the final point to seal the Mocs win.

The Moccasins play the host school, St. Mary's, in their second match tonight at 7 p.m. (CT), then meet Metro State at 10 a.m. (CT) and Millersville (Pa.) at 4:45 p.m. (CT) Saturday.
